The Sobaek Stream Valley in the camp was crowded by officers and men of three services of the Korean People's Army and people of various social strata who gathered to celebrate his 55th birthday with enthusiasm. Seen among them were Pak Song Chol, politburo member of the Workers' Party of Korea Central Committee and Vice-President of the DPRK, and other senior party and state officials, commanders of arms and services of the KPA, generals and anti-Japanese revolutionary war veterans. After floral baskets and bouquets were laid in front of Secretary Kim Jong Il's old home, fireworks began to be shot in celebration of the February holiday. Fireworks were also fired from mid-slopes of Jong Il Peak, adorning the secret camp beautifully. The crowd raised cheers with deep reverence for and loyalty to Secretary Kim Jong Il. Meanwhile, KPA servicemen met in front of the old home vowing loyalty to Secretary Kim Jong Il, the Supreme Commander. KPA Vice Marshal Kim Yong Chun, Chief of the KPA General staff, said the birth of Secretary Kim Jong Il was a great fortune of the nation and a historic event that guaranteed a bright future of the era of independence. UN name should not be abused -- Rodong Sinmun

Pyongyang, February 14 (KCNA) -- Vessels of the "United Nations Forces", which were formed during the Korean War (June 25, 1950-july 27,1953) with the U.S. Forces as the mainstay, have still visited U.S. bases in Japan frequently. Commenting on the fact, Rodong Sinmun today says: Still after 1975, many destroyers and submarines of various countries have visited Yokosuka and other U.S. bases under the name of the "United Nations Forces", revealing that the U.S. and Japanese reactionaries have invariably sought to stifle the Democratic People's Republic of Korea by abusing the name of the United Nations. The vessels' port access to U.S. bases in Japan can by no means be justified. The U.S. has been technically at war with the DPRK, while Japan has been hostile to the DPRK. If peace and security failed to be ensured on the Korean Peninsula, the U.S. and Japan too would be seriously affected by the consequences. The U.S. must stop trying to stifle the DPRK by abusing the name of the United Nations but clearly see the situation and dissolve the "United Nations Command", a legacy from the Cold War, which has been left without any real meaning. Nearly 22 years have passed since a resolution calling for the dissolution of the "United Nations Command" in South Korea was adopted at the UN General Assembly. The Cold War has been terminated and the implementation of the DPRK-U.S. framework agreement is now under way. It is high time that the U.S. delinked its military presence in South Korea from the name of the united nations, without losing face. If the U.S. thinks it can cover up its being a belligerent under the name of the united nations, it is a mistake. The prolonged belligerent relationship between the DPRK and the U.S. would be unfavorable to the U.S., either. So, the U.S. had better sign a tentative agreement with DPRK and jointly pave the way for a peace agreement. It would be favorable to the U.S. If it continues abusing the name of the united nations, the U.S. will be kept under fire for its arbitrariness and high-handedness and lose confidence from UN member nations. The Japanese authorities must discard the design of reinvasion for the sake of the Japanese people and avoid falling a prey to the U.S. The United Nations should take a step to withdraw its name and flag from U.S. Forces in South Korea. Those nations which remain registered in the "United Nations Command" should also take a step to quit it and substantially contribute to the conclusion of a tentative agreement between the DPRK and the U.S.

Paektu where Secretary Kim Jong Il was born, says the press. Taking much space of the press are accounts of functions held at home and abroad to celebrate the birthday of Secretary Kim Jong Il. Minju Joson urges Kim Young Sam to clarify truth of Hanbo scandal and face judgement

Pyongyang, February 14 (KCNA) -- Minju Joson today comes out with a signed commentary on the illegal loaning for the Hanbo steelworks exposed in South Korea some time ago. Pointing out that the South Korean public suspicion is now focussing on Kim Young Sam in connection with the Hanbo scandal, the analyst of the paper says: The spokesman for the opposition "National Congress for New Politics" in South Korea on February 12 said that Kim Young Sam and others in the hierarchy were involved in the Hanbo scandal. Earlier, on February 11, the "NCNP"and the "United Liberal Democrats", another opposition party in South Korea, held a joint meeting of "National Assemblymen", at which they declared that Kim Hyon Chol, the second son of Kim Young Sam, was involved in the Hanbo scandal. As were claimed by public circles of South Korea, the case of the illegal loaning for the Hanbo steelworks was a power-backed extra-large financial scandal caused by Kim Young Sam. Kim Young Sam and his second son, who are the behind-the-scene characters of the unlawful loaning of a sizable sum of money, are impostors who unhesitatingly resort to any means and method to earn money. All facts show that Kim Young Sam is wholly responsible for the Hanbo scandal. Kim Young Sam is making a formalistic investigation into the Hanbo scandal with the mobilisation of the prosecution, saying that it is a "deplorable case". However, this is nothing but a stop-gap measure to bury his crimes in obscurity. If he thinks that he can conceal his crimes, it is as foolish as a daydream.
