Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Board of Governors voted on Tuesday to award director and Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki with an Honorary Award at the Academy's 6th Annual Governors Awards on November 8.
The Governors Awards celebrate lifetime achievements of members of the film industry. The Oscar statuette of the Honorary Award is given to "to honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy."
The Academy previously honored Miyazaki for his work on Spirited Away with an Oscar for Best Animated Film in 2003. The Academy also invited Miyazaki to join its ranks in June. Miyazaki received at least three earlier invitations, but he declined each time.
Miyazaki retired from directing feature films last year.
Screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière and actress Maureen O'Hara will also receive Honorary Awards at the ceremony.
