When will Frank Thomas's Big Hurt Brewhouse open?

The original plan was for Big Hurt Brewhouse – co-owned by White Sox legend and recent Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Frank Thomas – to open in Berwyn in late 2013 or early 2014. Now the goal is to be open for the Bears’ home opener Sept. 7, according to Big Hurt Brewhouse’s tweet last month, but even that seems to be in doubt.

“We are not sure when we will officially be open,” said a Brewhouse spokeswoman on Wednesday when asked about the tweet.

The 10,800-square-foot Brewhouse took over the long-vacated historic bank building located in Berwyn’s Main Street corridor and will include a brewery and wood fire grill. The spokeswoman said the harsh winter contributed to the delays, as did the building’s age. “Being a 1920 bank building and given we are trying to retain as much of the building's original integrity as possible, the project took longer than expected,” said the spokeswoman.

Delays are not uncommon in the restaurant industry. RPM Steak – co-owned by reality TV couple Bill and...

Jason Segel signing children's book in Downers Grove

Before you ask why the guy who starred in “Sex Tape” and went full frontal in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” wrote a children’s book, let me remind you that Jason Segel also wrote and starred in “The Muppets” and lent his voice to “Despicable Me.” Really, it’s not that far-fetched. And besides, if Sarah Silverman can voice one of the main characters in a kid’s movie (“Wreck-It Ralph”), anything is possible in children’s entertainment.

Segel will sign copies of his book “Nightmares!” Sept. 14 at Tivoli Theatre in Downers Grove. The book signing is presented by Anderson’s Bookshop and will include a Q&A with Segel and screening of “The Muppets.”

“Nightmares!” is the first book in a planned trilogy and revolves around 11-year-old Charlie Laird, whose nightmares begin to creep into his daily life. Charlie and his friends must fight off President Fear in order to keep the nightmares from taking over. The book was inspired by nightmares Segel had as a child.

Jason Segel's "Nightmares!" book...

'Sinister 2' begins filming in Chicago this week

This week we'll add one more movie to the long list of horror flicks that have filmed in the Chicago area.

“Sinister 2” – the Blumhouse Productions sequel to 2012’s “Sinister,” which made $77 million at the world wide box office on a $3 million budget – will kick off its scheduled six-week shoot Tuesday in Chicago, according to a spokesman for Blumhouse. The spokesman added that filming will also take place in St. Anne and just outside of the village of Grant Park.

Ethan Hawke played a true crime novelist in the original “Sinister” who moves his family into a home where several murders took place. Blumhouse announced that the sequel will revolve around a mother played by Shannyn Sossamon (“A Knight’s Tale”) and her nine-year-old twins who “find themselves in a rural house marked for death.” James Ransone (“The Wire”) will reprise his role as the sheriff’s deputy.

"Sinister 2" has been casting various roles recently, including Lutheran church goers, a Norman Rockwell-type family...

Chicago DJ calls Miley Cyrus gig a career high

The first thing DJ Dante the Don thought when he woke up the morning after DJing at Miley Cyrus’s concert at the United Center was “Did last night really happen?”

Dante – who called Thursday’s gig “without a doubt” the biggest of his career -- kicked off his set with the Alan Parsons Project’s “Sirius” (aka the Bulls’ starting lineup song). He said Cyrus’s handlers allowed him to have free rein and didn’t give him any instructions.

“It was kind of weird,” said Dante (real name Dante Deiana) by email Friday. “They were really hands off. Literally set my stuff up and (they) said ‘Go kick (butt).’ Obviously, I wasn't going to play any of her songs, but I tried to play a bunch of stuff I know she likes that’s current.”

What was the highlight of the night for Dante?

“Probably when the lights at the United Center went out and I walked onto the stage and the crowd just went nuts,” Dante said. “It was such a surreal feeling and one I'll never forget.”

Dante has DJed alongside artists such as...

Rob Zombie's haunted house coming to Villa Park

Steve Kopelman said the Chicago area has really good haunted houses, but the haunted house producer and designer -- who has worked in the industry for over 30 years -- can't help but feel that the area is missing that one great one. He hopes to fill what he perceives to be a void this year with Rob Zombie’s Great American Nightmare.

Kopelman and the rocker-turned-horror movie director launched the haunted house in Pomona, Calif. in 2013 and this year are moving the haunt to two new locations, including the Odeum Expo Center in Villa Park. The Odeum was the former home of Hades Haunted House and, more recently, Asylum Xperiment.

“There are very good haunted houses in Chicago but there hasn’t been that one must-see attraction,” Kopelman said.

Zombie isn’t the first rocker to delve into the genre. Alice Cooper has lent his name to haunted houses around the country, including a location in Phoenix that Kopelman was part of over a decade ago.

“That was a royalty deal,” Kopelman said of...

Bears' Kyle Long interviews Kristin Cavallari for Michigan Avenue magazine

When Kristin Cavallari talks about husband Jay Cutler, we listen – even if she is pretty much just repeating what she’s already said about the Bears star.

Cavallari was interviewed by the Bears' Kyle Long on behalf of Michigan Avenue magazine. You might remember Michigan Avenue as the magazine that featured a fashionable Cutler on its cover months after he was traded to the Bears in 2009. Cavallari appears on the cover of the fall fashion issue, which hits newsstands Monday.

“Jay is a great dad,” Cavallari told Long. “He’s incredibly hands-on, and he has been since day one. It’s so sweet seeing him with Camden and Jax, and there’s nothing sexier than seeing your husband as a great dad. I couldn’t ask for a better partner in this situation.”

Cavallari also discussed how many children she wants, her jewelry and shoe line and her thoughts on Chicago. The couple has split time between the Chicago area, the Los Angeles area and Nashville.

“I love Chicago because my mom is here, along with...
