Festival will run from September 12-14 ― The Japan Film Society posted the schedule for the 4th Annual LA EigaFest in Hollywood. The September 12-14 weekend event will also screen Production I.G's Giovanni's Island anime film. Production I.G's Annecy-winning hand-animated Giovanni's Island film tells the story of two brothers living on the island of Shikotan. Their family and the people of the island hear of Japan's loss in the war and are told not to worry. However, their island gets caught in the middle of the continuing conflict in the west and is invaded by Russian soldiers. The boys meet a western girl on the island named Tanya and the older of the brothers, despite their language barriers, cultural differences, and warnings from friends, starts to fall in love with her. ― The "Ice Bucket Challenge" has been sweeping across the Internet, and it seems as though Japan is not immune to its viral, charitable charms. Live-action film to premiere on Crackle streaming service ― Zach Lipovsky (Leprechaun: Origins, Tasmanian Devils) has signed on to direct Crackle and Legendary Entertainment's live-action film adaptation of CAPCOM's Dead Rising zombie survival-horror video game. Kuroko's Basketball Threat Suspect Gets 4.5 Years in Prison

Tokyo court sentences man who sent threats linked to popular manga ― Presiding Judge Iwao Maeda of the Tokyo District Court sentenced Hirofumi Watanabe to four years and six months in prison on Thursday for sending threats linked to the Kuroko's Basketball manga. This is the same sentence length that the prosecution had requested during the closing arguments of the case last month. Watanabe admitted to his crimes, but said that "taking responsibility for them is impossible," and that his crimes were "a good revenge" against his parents. At his trial, he also commented, saying, "After I'm released from prison, I'm going to end my life, which was and is still meaningless."

Kōji Matsumoto Starts Next Higanjima Horror Manga Sequel

Series is inspiring a new live-action film, drama television series ― This year's 38th issue of Kodansha's Young Magazine is published the first chapter of Kōji Matsumoto's Higanjima 48-nichi-go… (Nirvana Island: 48 Days Later...) sequel manga on Monday. The manga is the third in Matsumoto's horror manga series and takes place after civilization around the world has collapsed and is now dominated by blood-thirsty vampires. Funimation Streams Hellsing Ultimate Trailer

Last two episodes of Hellsing Ultimate will ship in October FUNimation's official Twitter account streamed a trailer for Hellsing Ultimate Volumes IX and X on Wednesday. Uncut Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods Home Video Release Slated for October

Blu-ray and DVD release will include additional 20 min. of footage Funimation announced Wednesday that it will release Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods on Blu-ray and DVD in North America on October 7. The home video release will include two versions of the film: an uncut version with an additional 20 minutes of footage not shown in theaters, and the theatrical cut. Funimation describes the story: Following the events of the Dragon Ball Z television series, after the defeat of Majin Buu, a new power awakens and threatens humanity. Beerus, an ancient and powerful God of Destruction, searches for Goku after hearing rumors of the Saiyan warrior who defeated Frieza. Realizing the threat Beerus poses to their home planet, the Z-fighters must find a way to stop him before it's too late. Only Goku, humanity's last hope, can ascend to the level of a legendary Super Saiyan God and stop Beerus's from destroying Earth, and possibly the entire universe!

JAPIC Offering 2 Month Stay in Tokyo for International Animators

― The Japan Image Council (JAPIC) is accepting applications for its A-AIR Tokyo 2015 (Animation Artists in Residence Tokyo 2015) program. Three lucky artists from around the world will get to stay in Tokyo for 70 days between January 7 and March 17, 2015. Winners will have their travel expenses and rental accommodations paid while receiving a living allowance and expert assistance. Winners will also have the opportunity to work with Japanese creators and present their work. The three selected candidates will travel to Japanese animation studios while working on a project to be completed by the end of their stay.

All 5 episodes to stream August 21 ― Anime distribution site Daisuki, announced on Tuesday that it will stream Hanamonogatari, the latest story arc in the Monogatari anime series. All five episodes will premiere on August 21. The English-subtitled stream will be available for free in the USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. The episodes will also be available on Daisuki's iOS app. The Monogatari Series Second Season's sequel anime adapts NisiOisin's Hanamonogatari (Flower Story) novel. The story follows Suruga Kanbaru as she continues to attend Naoetsu High School, even though her beloved upperclassmen Hitagi and Koyomi do not attend anymore. While training one day, she hears the rumor of the Lord Devil, a figure that is said to be able to grant any wish. Weta Workshop, the special-effects studio behind Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, released some concept art from its work on Gareth Edwards' Godzilla film. The studio's Christian Pearce and Andrew Baker both worked on 2D and 3D design elements of the titular monster. A hardback artbook was released to coincide with the live-action film.
