Information During World War II, many British children, including residents of the old Borough of Finchley, were evacuated to Montclair in New Jersey. After the war, Montclair exchanged books with the localities from which the children had been evacuated, and the Finchley Atlantic Fellowship was formed in 1945. The relationship between the two towns dwindled in the late 50s but was rekindled during a series of events in the 1960s.

The first meeting of the Friends of the London Borough of Barnet took place in Montclair in 1983. Shortly afterwards in Barnet the Friends of Montclair group was formed.

Montclair is situated in the centre of the North Western Essex County in the State of New Jersey, just 12 miles from New York. The area was first settled in 1694 by English and Dutch farmers. The township was formed in 1868 by the joining of Speertown and Crane Town. In 1894 it was properly incorporated as a town.
