Remove marker.
Slip the stitches onto one double pointed needle. (Don’t turn your work! You want the working yarn to be carried across the back of the stitches.)
K2tog, K2. *Knit 3 stitches.
Slide the stitches to the opposite end of the double pointed needle. Do not turn.
Repeat from * until the cord measures 3”. Give the end a little tug after each row to give it a nice smooth, even fabric.
Bind off your stitches and secure the end. Cut a tail 12” long. Fold the end of the cord in half to create a button hole.
With the tail and a darning needle, secure the end to the main hat with a few stitches and then add a snug little knot.
Pull the tail back through the top where you started the i~cord. Pull snug and darn in end to hold it in place.
Finishing
Darn in all ends.
With needle and thread, sew the button onto the first stripe, just above the beginning of the round.
