The Sega Saturn was a terrific console, but sadly too few people were able to enjoy it because of its lack of success in the market. Read about it in Sam Pettus' in-depth writeup of its history and most notable games here: Kamikaze Console: Saturn and the fall of Sega

Eidolon's Inn is devoted to the classic SEGA videogame systems of the 1980's and '90's. For these consoles, we offer a wealth of information, both on their history and their technology. Consequently, all available emulators and ongoing development projects are discussed.

The end is nigh...
By: Eidolon  on: 2014/06/24 21:44 CEST
News
Only 10 days to go, then this website will be GONE forever.
The good news is that I succeeded in making a full copy of the publicly available website using HTTrack. It weighs in at a whopping 2.6 Gigabytes, mainly due to the stupid way TikiCMS serves pages.
So the Inn will not be lost forever, just will not be publicly available anymore.
Unless I find volunteers who will gradually migrate the best of the Inn content to my new website, which will also be announced in 10 days. :-)

Eidolon's Inn will be shut down on July 5th 2014
By: Eidolon  on: 2014/06/01 19:23 CEST
News
Dear Eidolon's Inn user,

the time has come - I have decided to shut down the website Eidolon's Inn.
All content and all user accounts will be deleted.
Mark the date: July 5th, 2014 - exactly on its 17th anniversary.

Most of you will have noticed that the "Inn" has become only a shadow of itself in the past decade.
The once-thriving Sega retro tech/emulation community kindled by the Inn in the late 90'ies and
early 00'ies has long moved on. Moreover, the decision to use Tiki technology made the site too
cumbersome to maintain in the last decade, further adding to it's decay.

Therefore, now is a good time for a final visit/login to the website, for example in case you
still have any important private messages in the site's mailbox you would like to hold on to, or
want to keep a copy of any of the content of the site. Please note this will be gone on July 5th!

However, this is most likely not the end of Eidolon's Inn altogether. I am still contemplating
what to do next, but the most likely scenario is that I will found a new website, where I will merge
some of the best content from Eidolon's Inn, and all content from my other pet website
"World of M.U.L.E.", plus altogether new content, into a new retro gaming website concept.
A concept which will better fit my limited amount of time I can spare for this hobby, using a
technology which is easier to maintain than Tiki.

Even though the content will be gone, the domain http://www.eidolons-inn.net (external link) will stay, where
I will announce the new website.

THANK YOU for having being a supporter of the Inn sometime in the past almost-two decades!

Best regards

SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis: Collected Works
By: Eidolon  on: 2013/11/13 17:06 CET
News
I don't know if anyone is still reading here - but if there is, I think the following Kickstarter project might be of interest!

SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis: Collected Works (external link)

The ultimate retrospective of the SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis. A documentary art book by Read-Only? Memory.

SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis: Collected Works (セガ メガド ライブ/ジェネシス:作品集成) will be the definitive volume on the landmark console. The book is officially licensed by SEGA and celebrates the 25th anniversary of the console’s release. It will be an unparalleled treasury of production artwork, interviews, development sketches and hardware manufacturing plans.

The Inn 2013 and beyond
By: Eidolon  on: 2012/12/29 20:37 CET
News
Dear Eidolon's Inn user,

I would like to let you know that the website in it's current form will be deactivated very soon, including all user accounts. I just don't have the spare time anymore to keep it up-to-date, neither from a technology nor from a content point of view.

However, it will *hopefully* not be the end of the website altogether. There is too much content which deserves to be preserved, such as
- Steve Snake's Kega emulator community
- Sam Pettus' SegaBase stories
- The Tavern community & community history (e.g. Tavern RPG -> Pier Solar)

So I will start the year 2013 by thinking of how to completely re-do the website from scratch. This is two-fold, technology and content.

1) Technology
It turns out that my 2004 choice - re-doing Eidolon's Inn with the complex TikiCMS system, was a dead-end. With my little spare time, I can't keep up with maintaining such a complex CMS. So the new CMS of choice will most likely be WordPress?, if it has a decent forum/BBS plugin. Because of this switch of technology, it will not be possible to migrate content and user accounts directly.

2) Content
Apart from the above-mentioned items, what else do you think MUST be migrated to the new website?

I would appreciate your feedback on this!

Moreover, if you have more spare time than me and would like to get a more active role in the "New Inn", please let me know!

Please head over to the Tavern to discuss this and contribute.

Thanks for your time,
Eidolon

zyrobs, 22:58 CEST, 2014/06/26: Is there any place we can get that 2.4gb httrack archive before the site folds?
sith-smasher, 16:25 CEST, 2014/06/20: That's great! I don't know any http and that stuff though. :/ Snakey doesn't reply my tweets, even bd wishes. I hope he's not mad at me for sth; just very very busy. :(
Eidolon, 11:40 CEST, 2014/06/18: Don't worry, I'll keep a full local copy of the Inn Database and will probably re-publish it piece by piece on my new website. Help for this monstrous task would be appreciated though - currently, Pablo and Snake are "in" on it.
King, 01:37 CEST, 2014/06/14: Man, RIP.
Ultraviolet, 15:16 CEST, 2014/06/11: Gutted :'( Agree with MERLiX and TulioAdriano - it was a rich history too. RIP, man.
sith-smasher, 00:21 CEST, 2014/06/10: Wait... what?!?
tomman, 01:57 CEST, 2014/06/09: Damn...
TulioAdriano, 17:33 CEST, 2014/06/07: Can't we at least dump all pages and make it a static thing? There's so much history here...
MERLiX, 20:29 CEST, 2014/06/05: Sorry to see this place go.
xSoNiCx, 18:50 CEST, 2014/06/05: Yay, Snake! :)))
