  One of the weakest adaptations of a Hemingway story. Ensemble includes Power & Gardner as lover's whose relationship is complicated by Ferrer & a drunken Flynn. Glacier-slow pace in the first half, but moves along once the bullfights begin in stunning Spanish setting. Overlong, but the patience is worth it for Hemingway fans. I give it a 2.5/5.

  This is an unusual film in that it follows very closely the book by Hemingway on which it is based. I watched the film the day after I finished reading the book. Hemingway's dialogue takes getting used to but it seems to lend itself to film scripts. It almost seems that Hemingway had in mind a film while he was writing the book.I thought that Errol Flynn walked away with acting honors which was surprising to me because I never considered him to be much of an actor. He was nearing 50 years of age and looked older. He made only 2 Hollywood films after this film.Flynn died in 1959 at age 50. Tyrone Power died in 1958 at age 44. On the other side of the coin Eddie Albert died at age 99 and Mel Ferrer at age 91. Ava Gardner died in 1990 at age 68. It almost seems as if she patterned her life after Hemingway's heroine Lady Brett. She had affairs with many men and even with a real life bullfighter.Hemingway's characters seemed bent on destruction and had no concern for the future. They were indeed a lost generation.The movie is well put together, the color photography is superb. I don't like bull fighting but it certainly makes for a spectacle. The cutting in the bull fight scenes is very well done...obviously a screen actor would not allow himself to be put in harm's way so stock footage was used but you could have fooled me.An interesting side light is the career of Robert Evans who portrayed Pedro Romero. This was at the beginning of his career and he was no doubt chosen because his face and body were those of a bull fighter. He performed creditably but I guess his range as an actor was limited because he went into the production side of the movie business and in 1967 he became head of production at Paramount and then produced several films himself. He enjoyed a success that he would never have found as an actor. His career is outlined in a book he wrote called "The Kid Stays in the Picture."

• Each role perfectly cast

  All the actors seem to really be tailor-made for these roles. And as a result, each character vividly comes to life on screen. Ava is at her sexiest; Ty Power gives us the right amount of older-but-still-boyish charm; Mel Ferrer infuses his part with just the right amount of creepiness; Eddie Albert gets the chance to play some great comic relief; and Errol Flynn steals the show as the irrepressible drunk. But what I really like is how the film captures the spirit of Hemingway's writing and shows us the wanderlust, the excitement and the philosophy of this group of expatriates and their interwoven destinies. When they all go off in separate directions near the end of the picture, the viewer can't help but feel melancholy...but it's been a worthwhile journey.
