Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer on a free transfer.
  • Name: Mark Schwarzer
  • Nationality: Australian
  • Date of Birth: 06/10/1972
  • Height: 194 cm
  • Weight: 95.0 kg
  • Previous Clubs: Fulham, Middlesbrough, Bradford, FC Kaiserslautern
  • Position: Goalkeeper

Mark Schwarzer joined on a free transfer on 9 July 2013.

The former Australian international goalkeeper signed a one-year contract with the Blues having been released by our west London neighbours Fulham in the summer.

'It's a phenomenal club,' he said upon signing. 'It's one of the biggest and best clubs in the world, and it's an honour to sign for Chelsea. I didn't take much convincing to come here.'

Schwarzer, 40, brings with him a wealth of experience after more than 15 years in England with Bradford City, Middlesbrough and most recently Fulham, and last season became the first overseas player to have made 500 Premier League appearances.

He made his debut in a Capital One Cup victory at Swindon, becoming Chelsea's oldest ever debutant in the process, and kept his place in that competition for games away to Arsenal and Sunderland. He also started in a Champions League home win against Steaua Bucharest. It was his maiden appearance in Europe's top competition.

Born in Sydney, Schwarzer began his career with Marconi Stallions before moving to Europe with German side Dynamo Dresden in 1994, which was followed by a short spell in the Bundesliga with Kaiserslautern.

A move to England followed in 1996, with Bradford City the platform from which Schwarzer signed for Middlesbrough, going on to play more than 400 times in 11 years, lifting the League Cup in 2003 and appearing in the 2006 UEFA Cup final against Sevilla.

In 2008, he moved south to west London with Fulham, spending five years at Craven Cottage, where he made 220 appearances.

Schwarzer made his international debut in 1994, and went on to represent Australia 108 times, including at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups. He retired from international football in November 2013.

The Australian made his Chelsea debut in our 2-0 Capital One Cup win at Swindon Town. He became the oldest player, at 41, to make his Champions League debut when he was given the nod to start in our 1-0 win against Steaua Bucharest.

Schwarzer didn't feature regularly for much of the campaign but when Petr Cech was ruled out for the rest of the season, having sustained an injury in our Champions League semi-final first leg against Atletico Madrid, Schwarzer played the remaining few games, including the 2-0 Premier League win at Liverpool.
