My name is Jeffrey Elric Diehl. I live in northern
Colorado with my daughter, several cats and the occasional ghostly visitor.
Although I will usually describe my Folkish path as Odinism, my
Heathenry is actually derived from more than one strand of Germanic religion.
Incorporating elements from Odinism, Asatru, Irminenschaft and Greater Theodism, this practice
covers a wide range of Teutonic tradition. My primary affiliations include
membership in the Asatru Folk Assembly and an Apprenticeship in the Odinic Rite.
On a local level I'm an active part of the Lone Tree Fellowship here in
Colorado.
I spend a great deal of time contemplating the many guises of the
wandering wind god Woden. A diverse deity of contradiction, this Gothick God of
Darkness* is also a Lord of Light. The Odinnic influence often leads me to strange places
in my quest for Ancestral gnosis. While my observance of the folk way is not unusual
(blots, symbels, et cetera), my understanding of the gods is perhaps more in keeping with
early Aryan Vedism. Additionally, my outlook is heavily influenced by the
amazing achievements of Viktor Rydberg, the nineteenth century poet and scholar who
reassembled the hidden epic of my forebears. To say the least, these eccentricities
put me at odds with most of modern Heathen thought! Nevertheless, so far my fellow
Asatruar and Odinists have been extremely supportive of me expressing differing opinions.
Healthy debate is always encouraged among reputable people of the heath.

The Ghost Kings
The ghost kings are marching; the midnight knows their tread,
From the distant, stealthy planets of the dim, unstable dead;

Song of the ( Pictish ) Race
High on his throne sat Bran Mak Morn
When the sun-god sank and the west was red;
He beckoned a girl with his drinking horn,

Something a child said many years ago...
"She often talked quietly to her mother as if she were simpy talking to herself.

The Hunter

Although nowadays the Horned God is solely associated with Wicca, this was not always so. Horned deities are an extremely ancient Indo-European tradition with even earlier precedents. Thirty-thousand years ago, the horned one made an appearence on the Paleolithic walls of the Caverne des Trois Freres in what is now France. In 3000 BCE, he could be found in the Indus Valley of northern India where he was known as Pashupati or Rudra. The Northern European Celts and Teutons were also very familiar with this concept. The Romano-Celts gave one of their horned gods the title Cernunnos. This is linguistically and conceptually related to the Anglo-Saxon god Herne. Herne is the Wild Huntsman who in certain parts of England leads the howling spirits of the dead.
With this in mind, it has been suggested that Herne is, in fact, the same god as Woden. In my opinion, one of the strongest indications of a connection between Herne and Woden can be found in the figure of St. Nicholas. The fact that St. Nick has many commonalties with Woden has been well established. Woden has worn the Santa Claus disguise for over a millennia. However, what makes this pertinent to the Herne discussion, is the fact that in some parts of Europe, St. Nicholas sports horns.
According to
English legend, the reason Herne rode the night skies was that he had committed suicide by
hanging himself from an oak in Windsor Forest. This is, of course, reminiscent of
Woden's plight on the World Tree.
Robin Hood has often been regarded as a son of Herne. The Anglo name Robin Hood is a variant of the Saxon name Rof Breocht Woden- the Bright Strength of Woden.
It would seem that Woden, when leading the Wild Hunt, sometimes takes the form of Herne. The All-Father has many faces after all.
Aside from the Odinnic nature of Herne, there are also Vanic elements at work in his character. Ing-Freyr, who seems to have a curious alliance with Woden, is closely associated with the stag and tusked boar. Freyr is the Horned God of the Vanir while Woden assumes this role among the Aesir. The Hunter of Windsor, fed by the energies of both these gods, is a powerful figure that still haunts the English forest and the inner landscape of the Northern Folk.
( The following quote is provided to compliment the possible connections between Woden and Freyr. While not in literal agreement with this conclusion, I do find some truth in the general idea of it when it comes to the woodland attributes of the two deities.)

Nova Roma I've always been interested in the influence the Romans had on Celtic and Germanic culture. I sometimes think that my ancestors used to attack Rome just to get at the Italian food. After eating at the Olive Garden, I could blame them not. However, if I'm not mistaken, pasta came to Italy AFTER the Roman period. This, by the way, is a marvelous site about all things Roman.
And now for something completely different
The Middle-Eastern cult has been the downfall of Western Civilization. A
staggering amount of ancient knowledge has been lost during the two thousand year
nightmare of religious persecution. The Church inspired plunge of Europe into the
Dark Ages was followed by the tragic Reformation which attempted to destroy the remaining
sacred places of tradition. However, as troubled as I am about this historical
horror, I can well appreciate some of the original goals of Christianity.
While I do not necessarily acknowledge a historical Jesus, I have an intense respect for
the Christos archetype. Indeed the Christ is akin to one of my Northern gods-
Balder. I also recognize the spiritual validity of certain esoteric forms of
Christianity. Here are a few that I've had some pleasant experiences with. If

Doctor Who, being an old science-fiction television show, has little to do with the
Northern Tradition. Therefore, one might find it strange that I would include a
Dr.Who link on a page that is essentially about culture and religion. However, I do
have an admittedly wyrd reason for doing this. One episode of this show established
that the Doctor is the same person known in Arthurian legend as Merlin. Well Merlin
is a Celtic manifestation of Woden. So in a peculiar way the fictional character of
the Doctor is remotely connected to Woden. (Yeah, I know I'm reaching a bit, but it

(A.A.Attanasio's Arthurian books have Cuchulain reborn as King Arthor. This
confuses matters somewhat because Robert E. Howard mentions that Cormac Mac Art once
fought Arthur. Perhaps it is one of those rare occasions where a soul reincarnates into
two people living simultaneously. After all, the name Artos does indicate a link
between the Pendragon and Cormac.)
