“Odinism is an ancient religion that acknowledges the gods by fostering thought, courage, honor, light, and beauty.  Older than history, Odinism is all that was called wisdom when the world was new and fresh.”

Jeff 2.jpg (159129 bytes)My name is Jeffrey Elric Diehl.  I live in northern Colorado with my daughter, several cats and the occasional ghostly visitor.     Although I will usually describe my Folkish path as Odinism, my Heathenry is actually derived from more than one strand of Germanic religion.  Incorporating elements from Odinism, Asatru, Irminenschaft and Greater Theodism, this practice covers a wide range of Teutonic tradition.  My primary affiliations include membership in the Asatru Folk Assembly and an Apprenticeship in the Odinic Rite.  On a local level I'm an active part of the Lone Tree Fellowship here in Colorado.     I spend a great deal of time contemplating the many guises of the wandering wind god Woden.  A diverse deity of contradiction, this Gothick God of Darkness* is also a Lord of Light. The Odinnic influence often leads me to strange places in my quest for Ancestral gnosis.  While my observance of the folk way is not unusual (blots, symbels, et cetera), my understanding of the gods is perhaps more in keeping with early Aryan Vedism.   Additionally, my outlook is heavily influenced by the amazing achievements of Viktor Rydberg, the nineteenth century poet and scholar who reassembled the hidden epic of my forebears.  To say the least, these eccentricities put me at odds with most of modern Heathen thought!  Nevertheless, so far my fellow Asatruar and Odinists have been extremely supportive of me expressing differing opinions.   Healthy debate is always encouraged among reputable people of the heath.

DiehlJeff.jpg (446663 bytes)LAY OF THE NORSE GODS AND HEROES.

Step out of the misty veil
Which darkly winds round thee;
Step out of the olden days,
Thou great Divinity!
Across thy mental vision
Passes the godly host,
That Bragi's melodies
Made Asgard's proudest boast.
There rise the sounds of music
From harp strings sweet and clear,
Wonderfully enchanting
To the receiving ear.
Thou wast it, thou hast carried
Sagas of northern fame,
Did'st boldly strike the harp strings
Of old skalds; just the same
Thou spann'st the bridge of Bifrost,
The pathway of the gods;-
O name the mighty heroes,
Draw pictures of the gods!

The Poetry of Robert E. Howard

              The Ghost Kings

The ghost kings are marching; the midnight knows their tread,
From the distant, stealthy planets of the dim, unstable dead;
There are whisperings on the night-winds and the shuddering stars have fled.

A ghostly trumpet echoes from a barren mountainhead;
Through the fen the wandering witch-lights gleam like phantom arrows sped;
There is silence in the valleys and the moon is rising red.

The ghost kings are marching down the ages' dusty maze;
The unseen feet are tramping through the moonlight's pallid haze,
Down the hollow clanging stairways of a million yesterdays.

The ghost kings are marching, where the vague moon-vapor creeps,
While the night-wind to their coming, like a thund'rous herald sweeps;
They are clad in ancient grandeur, but the world, unheeding, sleeps.

             The Song of Horsa's Galley

From the Baltic Sea our galleys sweep
to South and West and East,
We bring our bows from the Northern snows
that the great grey wolves may feast.

To the outmost roads of the plunging sea
Our dragon ships are hurled,
We have broken the chains of the Southern Danes
And now we break the world.

Out of the dark of the misty north
We come like shapes of gloam
To harry again the Southland men
And trample the arms of Rome.

The ravens circle above our prows
And our chant is the song of the sea.
They hear our oars by a thousand shores
And they know that the North is free.

-Robert E. Howard

             Thor's Son

Vkngship.wmf (4936 bytes)      Serpent prow on the Afric coast,
          Doom on the Moorish town;
And this is the song the steersman sang
        As the dragonship swept down:

I followed Asgrimm Snorri's son around the world and half-way back,
And 'scaped the hate of Galdjerhrun who sank our ship off Skagerack.
I lent my sword to Hrothgar then; his eyes were ice, his heart was hard;
He fell with half his weapon-men to our own kin at Mikligard.

And then for many a weary moon I labored at the galley's oar
Where men grow maddened by the rune of row-locks clacking ever more.
But I survived the reeking rack, the toil, the whips that burned and gashed,
The spiteful Greeks that scarred my back and trembled even while they lashed.

They sold me on the Eastern block; in silver coins their price was paid;
They girt me with a chain and lock, I laughed and they were sore afraid.
I toiled among the olive trees until a night of hot desire
Blew me a breath of outer seas and filled my veins with curious fire.

Then I arose and broke my chain and laughed to know that I was free,
And battered out my master's brain and fled and gained the open sea.
Beneath a copper sun adrift, I shunned the proa and the dhow,
Until I saw a sail uplift, and saw and knew the dragon prow.

Oh, East of sands and sunlit gulf, your blood is thin, your gods are few;
You could not break the Northern wolf and now the wolf has turned on you.
The fires that light the coasts of Spain fling shadows on the Eastern strand.
Master, your slave has come again with torch and axe in his right hand!

-Robert E. Howard

 Stonehen1.wmf (4560 bytes)   A Song of the ( Pictish ) Race

High on his throne sat Bran Mak Morn
When the sun-god sank and the west was red;
He beckoned a girl with his drinking horn,
And, "Sing me a song of the race," he said.

Her eyes were as dark as the seas of night,
Her lips were as red as the setting sun,
As, a dusky rose in the fading light,
She let her fingers dreamily run

Over the golden-whispered strings,
Seeking the soul of her ancient lyre;
        Bran sate still on the throne of kings,
        Bronze face limned in the sunset's fire

"First of the race of men," she sang,
"Far from an unknown land we came,
From the rim of the world where mountains hang
And the seas burn red with the sunset flame."

"First and the last of the race are we,
        Gone is the old world's gilt and pride,
Mu is a myth of the western sea,
Through halls of Atlantis the white sharks glide."

An image of bronze, the king sate still,
Javelins of crimson shot the west,
She brushed the strings and a murmured thrill
Swept up the chords to the highest crest.

"Hear ye the tale that the ancients tell,
Promised of yore by the god of the moon,
Hurled on the shore a deep sea shell,
Carved on the surface a mystic rune:"

" 'As ye were first in the mystic past
Out of the fogs of the dim of Time,
So shall the men of your race be last
When the world shall crumble,' so ran the rhyme."

" 'A man of your race, on peaks that clash,
Shall gaze on the reeling world below;
To billowing smoke shall he see it crash,
A floating fog of the winds that blow.' "

" 'Star-dust falling for aye through space.
Whirling about in the winds that spin;
Ye that were first, be the last-most race,
For one of your men shall be the last of men.' "

Into the silence her voice trailed off,
Yet it echoed across the dusk,
Over the heather the night-wind soft
Bore the scent of the forest's musk.

Red lips lifted, and dark eyes dreamed,
Bats came wheeling on stealthy wings;
But the moon rose gold and the far stars gleamed,
And the king still sate on the throne of kings.

Something a child said many years ago...

"She often talked quietly to her mother as if she were simpy talking to herself.   The mother had secretly written down the little girl's words. The little girl's real self was talking when she said,

I saw a mountain
And he was like Wotan looking at himself in the water.
I saw a cockatoo
And he was like sunset clouds.
Even leaves and little stones
Are different to my eyes sometimes.
I keep wondering through and through my heart
Where all the beautiful things in the world
Come from.
And while I wonder,
They go on being beautiful.

Later the mother put all these quiet remarks in a book, called Poems by a Little Girl.  The little girl's name is Hilda Conkling.  When great poets and critics, mothers and fathers, teachers, professors, and artists read these childish sayings, they all agreed that they were literature.  Yet it was only a little girl talking quietly to herself."

The Hunter of Windsor
herne3.jpg (44539 bytes) "Woden is the Woodland Spirit, and the Lord of all Nature.  His son is the Hooded Man, the English folk hero who will deliver us from oppression."    -Woden's Folk

Although nowadays the Horned God is solely associated with Wicca, this was not always so.  Horned deities are an extremely ancient Indo-European tradition with even earlier precedents.  Thirty-thousand years ago, the horned one made an appearence on the Paleolithic walls of the Caverne des Trois Freres in what is now France.  In 3000 BCE, he could be found in the Indus Valley of northern India where he was known as Pashupati or Rudra. The Northern European Celts and Teutons were also very familiar with this concept.  The Romano-Celts gave one of their horned gods the title Cernunnos.  This is linguistically and conceptually related to the Anglo-Saxon god Herne.  Herne is the Wild Huntsman who in certain parts of England leads the howling spirits of the dead.

With this in mind, it has been suggested that Herne is, in fact, the same god as Woden.   In my opinion, one of the strongest indications of a connection between Herne and Woden can be found in the figure of St. Nicholas.  The fact that St. Nick has many commonalties with Woden has been well established.  Woden has worn the Santa Claus disguise for over a millennia.  However, what makes this pertinent to the Herne discussion, is the fact that in some parts of Europe, St. Nicholas sports horns.

xmas06.jpg (8343 bytes)According to English legend, the reason Herne rode the night skies was that he had committed suicide by hanging himself from an oak in Windsor Forest.  This is, of course, reminiscent of Woden's plight on the World Tree.

Robin Hood has often been regarded as a son of Herne.  The Anglo name Robin Hood is a variant of the Saxon name Rof Breocht Woden- the Bright Strength of Woden.

It would seem that Woden, when leading the Wild Hunt, sometimes takes the form of Herne.  The All-Father has many faces after all.

Aside from the Odinnic nature of Herne, there are also Vanic elements at work in his character.  Ing-Freyr, who seems to have a curious alliance with Woden, is closely associated with the stag and tusked boar.  Freyr is the Horned God of the Vanir while Woden assumes this role among the Aesir.  The Hunter of Windsor, fed by the energies of both these gods, is a powerful figure that still haunts the English forest and the inner landscape of the Northern Folk.

( The following quote is provided to compliment the possible connections between Woden and Freyr.  While not in literal agreement with this conclusion, I do find some truth in the general idea of it when it comes to the woodland attributes of the two deities.)

"Like Odin, Frey was regarded as the god or patron of seafaring folk.   Also like Odin, he was described as the god of rain, sun, and fruit, which makes him Odin under another name."
- Herbert Spencer Robinson & Knox Wilson,  1950

The Northern Gnostic  This is my Christo-Heathen webpage that I created in early 2000.
I'm pleased that it has become closely associated with the English Folk Church of Andrew Waterhouse.

I am a very proud member of the Asatru Folk Assembly.  If you are new to all of this and want to learn more about our traditions in the AFA, please check out Steve McNallen's informative FAQ

Odsmal   Odsmal is one of the greatest Asatru books ever written. Modern Heathenry needed a tome such as this!  Containing profound wisdom, this book offers a glimpse of Asatru's highest potential.  Gudrun Kristin has done a great service for all contemplative Asatruar.

Seidhman Rants An excellent exploration of the mirror image ancestral community living underneath us.   This exceptional work, written by a man who ran out of luck, is highly recommended!

Viktor Rydberg   In my opinion Rydberg understood Norse mythology better than anyone. The work of this great mythologist has been continued by William Reaves. This is the most important research that has ever been done on Heathen theology.

Here is Viktor Rydberg's Teutonic Mythology which was translated by Rasmus B. Anderson.

Vedism is the ancient parent of all Indo-European religions.  The hidden resource behind Germanic,Celtic and Balto-Slavic traditions is Vedic culture.   The various branches of the Northern Tradition would do well to make more connections with it.  With this idea in mind, I recommend these informative sites to learn more about this form of sanatana-dharma.

Library of Ancient Hindu History    The theory that the Aryans invaded India is in question.  It is now beginning to look like the ancient Indo-European homeland was, in fact, India.  (Although I do find this Indian idea appealing, I'm torn on this issue.  Viktor Rydberg had a very convincing argument for a Northern European origin.)

Triloka: The Three Worlds     In Indo-European cosmology there are three main worlds or levels of existence.  Asatruar(and Druids) call these dimensions Asgard(Gwynvyd), Midgard(Abred) and Hel(Annwn).  Above the three worlds is the transcendent uppermost level Gimle(Ceugant).  Here is the same thing from the Hindu perspective.

Nova Roma   I've always been interested in the influence the Romans had on Celtic and Germanic culture.  I sometimes think that my ancestors used to attack Rome just to get at the Italian food.   After eating at the Olive Garden, I could blame them not.  However, if I'm not mistaken, pasta came to Italy AFTER the Roman period.  This, by the way, is a marvelous site about all things Roman.

And now for something completely different

The Middle-Eastern cult has been the downfall of Western Civilization.  A staggering amount of ancient knowledge has been lost during the two thousand year nightmare of religious persecution.  The Church inspired plunge of Europe into the Dark Ages was followed by the tragic Reformation which attempted to destroy the remaining sacred places of tradition.  However, as troubled as I am about this historical horror, I can well appreciate some of the original goals of Christianity.  While I do not necessarily acknowledge a historical Jesus, I have an intense respect for the Christos archetype. Indeed the Christ is akin to one of my Northern gods-  Balder.  I also recognize the spiritual validity of certain esoteric forms of Christianity.  Here are a few that I've had some pleasant experiences with.  If the majority of christendom was like the following denominations, the world would be a far better place!     The Liberal Catholic Church    Unity   Ecclesia Gnostica

The Flaming Chalice is a much needed symbol of religious freedom.  This powerful image has always reminded me of the Grail.  It also possibly relates to the sword Caliburn/Excalibur as Ex-kylie-Pur is Greek for 'out of a cup, a fire'.   (The only drawback with UU stuff is the political correctness that often accompanies it.)

Doctor Who, being an old science-fiction television show, has little to do with the Northern Tradition.  Therefore, one might find it strange that I would include a Dr.Who link on a page that is essentially about culture and religion.  However, I do have an admittedly wyrd reason for doing this.  One episode of this show established that the Doctor is the same person known in Arthurian legend as Merlin.  Well Merlin is a Celtic manifestation of Woden.  So in a peculiar way the fictional character of the Doctor is remotely connected to Woden. (Yeah, I know I'm reaching a bit, but it provides a great excuse to offer my own page on the subject.)

Rich Geib's Humble Outpost in Cyberspace    Saying that this is the best web site that I have ever seen on the entire World Wide Web would not be an exaggeration.  You could spend endless days exploring  Mr. Geib's pages.  I guarantee that if you made such an effort, you would be richer for the experience.  This doesn't mean that I have always been in full agreement with everything I've found there; but it has always given me something to think about.  (Actually there is so much material amassed here that it would be impossible for anyone to completely agree with everything on this site!)  Rich Geib is a teacher in the fullest sense of the word.

Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization   Bigfoot Encounters   Bigfoot Museum
Whether or not this creature is physically real has no bearing on its existence in the spirit world.  Representing the Mystery of the North American forest, the Sasquatch is a reflection of an incredibly ancient archetype.  We may view Bigfoot as an aspect of the Wild Man, the same beast-god who once evolved into the devil, Green Man, Robin Hood, Peter Pan, Black Peter and Santa Claus.

In the Cormac Mac Art books by Andrew J. Offutt, it is revealed that Cormac is not only the reincarnation of both Kull and Conan, but had also more recently incarnated as Ireland's greatest champion- Cuchulain.  Cuchulain was the son and avatar of the god Lugh Lamhfada.
(A.A.Attanasio's Arthurian books have Cuchulain reborn as King Arthor. This confuses matters somewhat because Robert E. Howard mentions that Cormac Mac Art once fought Arthur. Perhaps it is one of those rare occasions where a soul reincarnates into two people living simultaneously. After all, the name Artos does indicate a link between the Pendragon and Cormac.)

I also greatly admire the forest god created by Edgar Rice Burroughs. 'Feral Folk' is my own.

"Tarzan's real title contains an epithet for Woden..."
"That Tarzan's arms bear the ancient symbol of Woden indicates that his ancestors clung to the old religion long after their neighbors were christianized."

- Philip Jose Farmer, The Arms of Tarzan,   September 5th  1970

"...Tarzan has as ancestor Woden.  It would be difficult to find a more highly placed forefather than the All-Father.  Perhaps the great god of the North is not dead but is in hiding.  It pleased the Wild Huntsman to direct the falling star of Wold Newton near the two coaches.  Thus, in a manner of speaking, he fathered the children of the occupants."
- Philip Jose Farmer Tarzan Alive,  1972

I incidentally happen to have the same birthday (November 21) as the apocryphal Tarzan in A Feast Unknown and Lord of the Trees by Philip Jose Farmer.
"I stood by the body of my grandfather, of the man who may have fathered many times in the Grandrith line, the millennia-old man who had once been worshiped as a god, as Wothenjaz by the first Germanic speakers, then as Wothen and Othinn and Wodan.   The Mad One.  He had many names, but in the caves of the Nine, he was called XauXaz, which meant, in proto-Germanic, High."
- Tarzan narrative from Philip Jose Farmer's novel Lord of the Trees.

As you may have noticed, one of my hobbies is Wold Newton speculation.  This is really just one name for a game that always occupied my attention and will continue to intrigue me until the end of my days.  Here is some of it.  (Even though this stuff is just for fun, you can actually discern much of my personal theology in it.  This facination with the comic book and pulp fiction hero is really part of my quest for a modern mythology.)    The Connecting Factor

                                                       Dedications

This webpage is dedicated to the 4500 Heathen Saxons who were murdered by Charlemagne for refusing to be baptised.  I would also like to honor the countless Scandinavian Heathens who were tortured and murdered by Olaf Tryggvason and "Saint" Olaf Haraldsson.  Sadly, this second Olaf tyrant is now the patron saint of Norway because of these actions.  His many victims, who would not submit to forced conversion, should be remembered for their courage.

Rig Veda HYMN XLIII. Rudra.

1 WHAT shall we sing to Rudra, strong, most bounteous, excellently wise,
That shall be dearest to his heart?
2 That Aditi may grant the grace of Rudra to our folk, our kine,
Our cattle and our progeny;
3 That Mitra and that Varuna, that Rudra may remember us,
Yea, all the Gods with one accord.
4 To Rudra Lord of sacrifice, of hymns and balmy medicines,
We pray for joy and health and strength.
5 He shines in splendour like the Sun, refulgent as bright gold is he,
The good, the best among the Gods.
6 May he grant health into our steeds, wellbeing to our rams and ewes,
To men, to women, and to kine.
7 O Soma, set thou upon us the glory of a hundred men,
The great renown of mighty chiefs.
8 Let not malignities, nor those who trouble Soma, hinder us.
Indu, give us a share of strength.
9 Soma! head, central point, love these; Soma! know these as serving thee,
Children of thee Immortal, at the highest place of holy law.
