History of the BLB

Since the mid-1990’s, the Lord has reached millions of lives in over two hundred countries through Sowing Circle’s ministry of Blue Letter Bible. Our vision for creating a website offering Bible study reference tools was established in the mid 1990’s, at the beginning of the technological revolution. It has developed into one of the most advanced Bible centric study resources available offering a vast array of study tools that link off of Bible content pages. By God’s grace, BLB has fostered an in-depth understanding of the Bible, allowing God’s Word to permeate the hearts and minds of Christians around the world who are hungry to grow in the truth of Jesus Christ.

In 1995, BLB began by offering the King James Version and commentaries online, which were followed by the Hebrew and Greek Lexicon, audio sermons, maps, and other Bible versions. In 2003, BLB introduced BLB Institute, making 4 Bible courses available free of charge. By 2005, BLB expanded online offerings to include twelve English, one Spanish, three Greek, one original Hebrew, and the Latin Vulgate Bible versions. During these formative years, BLB added several commentaries, sermons, and other resources, most of which are linked to Bible passages.

By 2011, BLB would deliver over 680,000 content pages for public use and more than doubled its reach in a 5 year period, reaching nearly 10 million unique visitors. In recent years, several new courses were added to the BLB Institute drawing over 70,000 registered students representing 201 countries. The BLB Blog was developed, reaching just over 90,000 unique visitors in 2011 and BLB apps were introduced for the iPhone and iPad, which registered over 550,000 cumulative uploads by the end of 2011. We continue to press forward with exciting new projects such as a new web version of BLB, smartphone application development, an antiquarian digital book project, women’s ministry content, language translations and more.

BLB has been at the forefront of spreading the Word of God and fostering the spiritual growth of millions of people through web-based technologies. In the mid 1990’s, at a time when personal computers were only beginning to surface in mainstream public, the Lord was giving Sowing Circle a vision for online Bible access and in-depth study through BLB. Since then, we have faithfully led the way towards providing web-based Bible resources for the edification of the Church worldwide.
