Highway 404 Projects

As Ontario's fastest growing region, York is experiencing high traffic volumes. The Ministry of Transportation is making a number of infrastructure improvements to Highway 404 to improve traffic flow and enhance road safety in the area.

Since 1995, the Ministry of Transportation has invested $81.4 million on Highway 404 improvements.

  • MTO completed construction of the widening of Highway 404 between Highway 401 and Highway 7 from six to eight lanes in 1998, at a cost of $20.2 million.
  • In 1999, the ministry expanded Highway 404 between Highway 7 and Major Mackenzie Drive from four to six lanes, with construction costs totaling $9.4 million
  • A Highway 404 widening project between Major MacKenzie Drive and Aurora Road started in the summer of 2001, and was opened to traffic in December 2001.

  • The ministry is preparing a cost-sharing agreement with York Region for the north ramps at the 16th Avenue interchange.
  • The Ministry has completed an Environmental Assessment (EA) study to extend Highway 404 from Davis Drive northerly to Highway 12, a distance of 54 km.
  • The Ministry has completed an Environmental Assessment (EA) study on the Bradford bypass, a 16.2 km rural four-lane freeway in the County of Simcoe and York Region connecting Highway 400 to the proposed Highway 404 extension.
  • York Region has initiated detailed designs for the expansion of Elgin Mills Road, including a full interchange at Highway 404.

The province recognizes the importance of a safe and efficient transportation network for the growing communities of Markham, Richmond Hill, Newmarket, and Aurora, and will continue to ensure that the provincial highway needs in York Region are met.
