And while in this day of digital image manipulation that might not be as true as it once was, these photographs are considered by many to be the real deal - photographic evidence of ghosts. Faking ghost photos through double exposure and in-the-lab trickery has been around as long as photography itself; and today, computer graphics programs can easily and convincingly create ghost images. But these photos are generally thought to be untouched, genuine portraits of the unexplained.

When examining photos for possible paranormal elements, we have to be very careful and skeptical. So many things can spoil the photographic image, which by its very nature is sensitive. Stray light, reflections, dust, hair, and insects can all cause photo anomalies. Just because you didn't see something in the viewfinder that later appears in your photo does not mean it's a ghost. Here we're referring to images that fool your brain into seeing something that isn't really there. It's called pareidolia or matrixing -- optical illusions. On April 11, 2008, I traveled with the Central New York Ghost Hunters to Rolling Hills in East Bethany, New York, reputed to be one of the most haunted locations in the Northeast. Reported activity includes voices of unknown origin, footsteps, physical assaults such as pokes and hair tugs, unexplained cold spots, EVP and occasional apparitions.
