PARIS — A rare 18th century Japanese print by Toshusai Sharaku fetched a world record 396,000 euros (589,000 dollars) at a Paris auction Friday.
The colour print by the artist, who worked for a mere 10 months between 1794 and 1795, represents Japanese actor Arashi Ryuzo.
It had originally been estimated at between 50,000 and 60,000 euros (74,400 to 89,400 dollars) by Piasa auctioneers.
