Transport for London

1996

1996 stock 1996 stock.

A completely new fleet of 59 trains was built and delivered as part of the Jubilee line extension project.

Called 1996 Tube Stock, there were six cars per train, comprising two three-car units, with provision for a seventh car per train to be added at a later stage. The seventh car was added over the 2005/6 Christmas period, as well as the addition of four new trains to the fleet (increasing the fleet to 63 trains).

The trains are constructed with aluminium extrusions welded together forming a Tube profile. This is known as a monocoque structure which gives maximum strength.

The trains have fully blended dynamic regenerative/rheostatic and electro-pneumatic friction tread brakes with load control and slip/slide protection. There is one brake block per wheel, on all wheels.

The first 96TS trains ran in passenger service on Christmas Eve 1997. The stock was phased in gradually, replacing the former 1983 stock on an old for new basis until the full service was completely running with new rolling stock in July 1998.

Originally intended for automatic train operation, they operated as conventional one person operation with Tripcock Train Protection until 2010 when the line began to operate the upgraded TBTC signalling system. This enabled faster trains and increased frequency.

Internally, the trains are similar to the 1995 stock on the Northern line, but additional perch seats replace the tip-up seats. Although similar in appearance, the two stocks have very different technical features.

There are six automated LED scrolling visual display units in each car, along with automated audio station announcements and a driver operable Public Address system. The passenger alarm offers talkback facility with the driver.

Total seating capacity per seven-car train is 234, plus 24 wheelchair spaces.

Total standing capacity per seven car train is 583, making a total of 817* per train.

Length per car 17.77m
Width per car 2.629m
Height 2.875m

Driving motor car 30.0 tonnes
Trailer car 20.9 tonnes
Uncoupling Non-Driving motor car 27.1 tonnes

*Total train capacity is based on 4 passengers per m2
