Cheeka

rip Cheeka (Cheeky-Mu, or just Mu, to her close friends)rip

Cheeka came to me about 3 years ago, after a friend (thankyou Lucy) found her in a potato field, while ironicaly looking for her friends lost dog.

She was a stray for most of her early life, probably eating rabbits & birds, as she was built like an athlete. Her rear end was totaly out of proportion she was so muscly, so she had no problem catching food !

As she was stray her history is fuzzy.

She was aprox. 10 months old when she was found, and seems to be a mix of Lurcher/Geman Shepard/Labrador (a wonderfull blend).heart

I had a few magic years with a magik friend/companion/daughter. She was a bright spark of light in the darkness:love:
I also had a few trials and tribulations with her, as you do with children.

One such incident inspired my poem "Dead Dogs & Cornishmen" on my poems blog/page I call "The Shed"(that poor teddy-bear still is't fixed).

She became a confident (& sometimes willfull) character, as I let her make her own friends, and go exploring the Cornish countryside, and once she overcame her fear of water, she loved to play in the rivers & sea. Being a mix of hunting dogs she did like running in the fields, and foraging though the woods. She would sit and watch sqirrels for ages (I know she just wanted to eat them:chef: )

Being a free & independant spirit, she was equally inclined to go exploring on her own given the chance. I never worried about her running away, just following her nose till she wandered into trouble.doh

Unfortunately on 13th of Oct 2007 she walked out of my life for her last exploration.
The house I was in has its door open, so their dog can guard the chickens. On the way back from the kitchen, she decided not to follow me into the living room, walked out the front door, and down onto the busiest road in Cornwall.

By the time I made it to the bottom of the lane it was too late, she had already been hit.
The scene I wanted to see was not to be, she was laying still in the middle of the road. All I could say was "NO" repeatedly over & over, but she was still breathing tiny shallow breaths, and by the time we got her to the side of the road (in a travel blanket someone who stopped offered), her breathing was getting stonger.
I then had the sureal time with the people who hit her, consoling the unconsolable, and me forgiving the unforgivable.

Someone called a local emergency night vet, who rushed her back to town to try and stabilize her. I arived shortly afterwards to find her stronger but still unresponsive. I don't know if she knew what happend to her, or that I was with her at any point.
She never came round and died of internal bleeding, in the early hours of the following morning.

She is buried under the shade of a holly tree, on a friends land, next to Baldrick my familys old dog.
Baldrick Stardog-Champion, he loved chasing rabbits too, and was oddly enough a similar mix of breeds, I wish they could have met, they would have made Beautiful pups.
Sigh, different era, different lives.

I have started building a Cairn over the place where she lays, and over the coming months, maybe years (it takes a while on your own), I will bring more of her friends, to lay a rock they bring from where they live, or a place the love.
I have been overwelmed by the tributes brought so far.
My friend Phil gave "Greg the love-egg" his big ball of Granite he used to keep on the heater, to keep him warm on a cold night.
My friends the Wayward Wenches, gave a beautiful carved and painted Celtic stone coin, I will be using as a cap-stone (it's quite large).

My simple on-line tribute is here http://my.opera.com/dr_flay/blog/cheeka

Thankyou, I keep thinking I am feeling better, but every now and then something will spark me off, and I turn into a wet snotty mess all over again:cry:

For example the film "I am Legend". A man living alone for 3 years with his dog as his only friend, and then he has to send her back to Mother Earth in a very hard and personal way.
It took me a few days to get it out of my head and function normaly.

*hugz*

Everyone's been telling me that time will heal... It will, I suppose...

U know what? Our furballs are alive... They live on in our memories... up heart

Doc Flay™dr-flay Monday, April 21, 2008 8:30:08 PM

Thankyou, have a hippy-hug back.

They also live on, on this site (and mine).
I think this site helps somewhat.

I'm now waiting for the universe to send me another furry friend, though I'm not going to push it.

I think it's easier to cope for those who have more than one dog at a time.
She was so young, thats what hurts the most.

gonna do something else now, I'm getting a wet face again cry

Awwwww...

I still miss my BB very much and I still long to hold his furry little body but I guess that's gotta wait till I'm dead. lol

I don't think I can handle having another furbaby... U are brave. Have a happy time with yr new pet when u get one. smile
