Photographic Studies

Photographic Studies teaches students how to use resources such as lighting, design elements and modern technology to set up the perfect composition for any given picture.

Important aspects such as layout, framing and technique are dealt with, while attention is also given to how technical aids such as digital editing software (e.g. Photoshop) can be used to create the desired image.

Information for digital photography students:

    • Digital photography has essentially taken over and replaced the use of photographic film. As a consequence, students need to be able to use a computer to edit and manage their digital photos.

    • Many colleges in South Africa offer courses in digital photography. When you choose a college, you need to make sure that it is properly accredited and that it has a good reputation.

    • If your aim is to pursue a professional photography career, you should note that it will take some time, hard work and dedication to establish yourself as a photographer. Many successful photographers started out in the same position as the one that you are in now.

    • If your aim is to start your own photography business, then it may be useful to study a basic business course as well. This will be useful in helping you to acquire the fundamental knowledge required to start up a business successfully.

Photography study options:

There are many photography schools to choose from in South Africa. Before you register to study photography, you should be fully aware of the options that are available to you.

It is possible to study photography on either a full-time or part-time basis. It is also possible to study photography via distance learning. Distance learning is a form of education where students are not required to attend classes on a regular basis. Instead, students are provided with course material via post or courier, and are then able to work through the material in their own time at home.

Distance learning may be a good option if you are interested in taking up photography as a hobby, and don’t want it to interfere with your other commitments. It is also a good option if you prefer to study according to your own schedule, or if you are unable to attend classes.

If the concept of distance learning appeals to you, you might be interested in studying one of the following photography courses at College SA:
