THE report on possible retrenchments in the chemical sector is certainly unexpected, given that the industry produces higher-value products ("Possible layoffs in chemical industry: NTUC"; Thursday). But the greater concern is the knock-on effect, when players in the supply chain follow suit.
I WAS among the many motorists caught in the massive tailback of cars returning from Malaysia to Singapore on Wednesday ("Long wait at Woodlands border"; Thursday).
I AGREE that retirement villages should be for the elderly and not for investment purposes ("Keep to spirit of retirement housing" by Mr Lawrence Loh Kiah Muan; Tuesday).
ON DEC 11 last year, I went online to try to redeem my SingTel reward points. I happened to glance through the details of the online account and saw an additional account that I had no knowledge of.
WE THANK Mr Francis Cheng ("Smoke-free zones: Tighter enforcement needed"; Forum Online) and Mr Jonathan Toh Joo Khai ("Ending the smoking scourge") for their feedback on Jan 15.
How can schools ensure the safety of students during physical education lessons? Do medical screening and questionnaires help?
LAST Saturday's commentary ("Is a tax hike in sight?") opined that a tax hike would not be imminent in the coming Budget, and that we should be mindful to keep our tax rates competitive vis-a-vis Hong Kong.
WE THANK Mr Francis Cheng ("Get tough on those who flout fire safety rules") and Mr Ong Tiong Meng ("Improving safety") for their feedback and suggestions last Saturday.
IT IS heartening that many private companies are encouraging their workers to take up voluntary work ("Fewer volunteer in off-peak periods"; Tuesday).

LIKE many others, I am baffled as to how a Malaysian woman could allegedly sneak past border security at the Woodlands Checkpoint a week ago ("Malaysian drove through checkpoint without clearance"; Wednesday).
IT TOOK me two hours to clear the immigration and Customs checks at Woodlands Checkpoint on Thursday.
THERE has been much discussion on smoking ("Ending the smoking scourge" by Mr Jonathan Toh Joo Khai, and "Smoke-free zones: Tighter enforcement needed" by Mr Francis Cheng, Forum Online; both published on Jan 15).
I AGREE with Madam Grace Chua Siew Hwee's proposal ("Limit access to cigarettes"; Tuesday), and hope the authorities will consider other suggestions.
MY HUSBAND and I spent about 10 years living overseas. Now that we are back in Singapore and in our 50s, we wait with bated breath as the country struggles to define possibilities of a retirement village in our multi-storeyed urban sprawl.
I AGREE with Mr Raymund Koh Joo Guan that maids should be properly compensated for working on their days off ("Pay maids double for working on rest days"; Jan 16).
