When Fujifilm announced its FinePix X100 retro-styled compact at Photokina 2010, it instantly captured the imagination of serious photographers. With its fixed 23mm F2 lens and SLR-sized APS-C sensor, it offered outstanding image quality, while its 'traditional' dial-based handling and innovative optical/electronic 'hybrid' viewfinder gave a shooting experience reminiscent of rangefinder cameras. On launch its firmware was riddled with frustrating bugs and quirks, but a series of updates transformed it into a serious photographic tool. Certain flaws remained, apparently too deeply embedded into the hardware to be fixable, but despite this, it counts as something of a cult classic.

Ricoh GR review: A high performance compact camera

Released in April 2013, the Ricoh GR goes by the tagline of “Everything is big, except the size”. It points clearly to the raison d’être of this camera – to be a compact model with a large sensor with the aim of offering DSLR-like performance without the size and weight associated with them. As with several models in this niche, it seems to hark back to days gone by with a retro style. While this impacts the versatility of the camera, it’s much easier to make a high quality prime lens that can extract the most from the large, 16megapixel APS-C sensor tucked away inside. Within this sector we’ve seen some very good cameras through the labs in recent months, so the GR has got stiff competition.

Nikon Coolpix A Sensor Review: Nikon’s first compact packing an APS-C sensor

Launched in March 2013 the $1097 Coolpix A is Nikon’s first compact camera with an APC-S sensor and features the same 16.2-megapixel DX sensor from Nikon’s D7000 DSLR but with its optical low-pass filter removed. Utilizing a fixed NIKKOR 18.5mm f/2.8 prime lens (equivalent to 28mm in 35mm terms) the Nikon Coolpix A has the right ingredients for great image quality so let’s see how it performs.

The high-end Sony RX1 was one of the most eagerly awaited cameras in our labs and while we assessed the camera’s full-frame sensor early in January, we’ve decided to publish the results of the Zeiss-branded Sonnar 2/35 T* lens. Readers will already be aware that it’s fixed, and can’t be purchased separately, but we can test it just as we would any other, albeit on one camera body only. Is this “fast”, moderately wide-angle lens an outstanding performer worthy of the Carl Zeiss name? Read on to find out.

where is xpro1?

you are testing mobile camera phones and leaving xtrans?
what's the issue?

Many of us would love to see the X-Pro1 or X-E1 tested. We have been waiting a long time.

Thanks for the response. I understand that demosaicing the X-Trans is difficult. Adobe does a marginal job with it, but PhaseOne now has excellent X-Trans support. We Fuji owners are still hoping that DXO will one day test and support X-Trans.

You say that you won't test X-Trans or EXR, but you already tested the EXR sensor in the X10. How is it that you tested the X10, but can't test the XF1 or XS1 that have the same sensor?

As you probably know, the Fuji X-Pro 1 does not use a Bayer matrix but a “X-Trans” matrix.

We will try to test this sensor, but although we want to satisfy your requests to provide tests for specific camera models, there are no plans for doing it in the short term.
