AAA estimates that more than 43 million people in the U.S. will be traveling more than 50 miles this Thanksgiving holiday. With a big storm hitting the East Coast, airline passengers have been waiting to see if their flights will leave on time.
So far today, security lines have been short at San Francisco International Airport on what's supposed to be one of the busiest travel days of the year. About 120,000 people are expected to pass through SFO on the day before Thanksgiving and a total of 1.2 million over the 10 day holiday period. Many people booked an early flight to try to avoid the rush.
A storm on the East Coast made some passengers nervous they might not make it to their loved ones' home before the pumpkin pie was served, but this morning only a few flights were delayed mostly to Philadelphia, New York and Washington D.C.
Today's passenger traffic is more than double a normal day with more families than business travelers. But an early start and a destination not on the East Coast means this family will enjoy their non-traditional Thanksgiving vacation in Los Cabos without any delays.
"Will you still have turkey," asked ABC7's Matt Keller.
"Yeah, I'm sure we can find turkey in the restaurant. We'll definitely plan on doing that," said airline passenger Minna Lee.
As of about 11 a.m., long term parking was full, but they're giving out vouchers to other parking lots at the airport so you can pay the long term rate in the short term parking.
SFO is featuring jazz musicians at each terminal who will play music to welcome travelers.
