The wreckage of a German World War II submarine has been found off Indonesia's Java island, local media reported on Wednesday.

A team from Indonesia's National Center of Archaeological Research found the wreckage of the U-168 submarine last week following information from fishermen, the news portal Detik.com reported.

"We found Nazi insignia inside the boat," team leader Priyatno Hadi told Detik.com. "The stern of the ship disappeared, apparently the result of being torpedoed."

Liputan6.com news portal said the submarine was torpedoed by a Dutch ship as it was on its way to meet two other German vessels for an operation off Australia in 1944.

Hadi said the team would inspect the wreckage again soon. Archaeology center officials could not be reached for comment.
