Quite often on Phoronix we cover various experimental open-source projects that catch our interest as they're interesting from a technical perspective, but often these projects don't end up stabilizing due to limited manpower or prove to be too technically ambitious. Here's a look at some of the less heard of open-source projects that have previously been covered on Phoronix to look at where they are today.

Ola, guys. Let us review Sabayon 11. This time though, I will be deviating from my usual KDE experience and check whether this semi-monster Gentoo-based distro can deliver equally fun results when blessed with a less mainstream desktop environment. Anyhow, my past reviews with Sabayon have gone from stupendous to buggy to somewhat boring. My feeling is that the distribution has lost its passion and momentum, and that is now merely trying to make Gentoo more presentable, while wallowing in lost identity. That's what version 8 has taught me. So let us see what version 11 can do.

Toorox 01.2013 'KDE' has been finished and you can download it as 32-bit or 64-bit image. This release is based on the latest Linux kernel 3.7.1. All packages have been updated. KDE has been updated to the latest version, 4.9.4. The release also contains X.Org Server 1.13.0, LibreOffice 3.6.4.3, Chromium 24.0.1312.45, VLC 2.0.5, WINE 1.5.20, GIMP 2.8.2. With this release, Toorox makes use of UUIDs instead of simple device names in the fstab file. So a ramdisk (initramfs) is now necessary after the installation for booting the system from hard disk. The hard disk installer has been enhanced as to that. Have fun with Toorox.

While Ubuntu has been taking the ARM server and desktop markets seriously for quite some time and is leading quite well on that front, Fedora has been getting behind ARM, and other distributions like Gentoo and Arch have their own interesting ARM Linux undertakings, openSUSE has been rather late to the party.

Today I created a short video on Sabayon Linux 10 XFCE. Sabayon comes in many flavours of desktop managers. XFCE is probably one of the lightest, so I decided to look at it. I have to admit, I have always had issues with Gentoo, Sabayon is based on Gentoo and from what I have read helps Noobs like me come to grips with Gentoo. As far as Sabayon’s ‘Out of the Box’ theory it is basically sound as installation, although different from other distributions I have played with was flawless.

The latest Linux ARM benchmarks at Phoronix are comparing the performance of Gentoo Linux against Linaro 12.08 from a 1.4GHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 development board.

Here's some interesting test results recently uploaded to OpenBenchmarking.org that compares the performance of ARM Cortex A8 and Cortex A9 cores running at 1.0GHz against an Intel Atom N450. All three systems running at 1.0GHz were also running Gentoo Linux. Clock-for-clock, can the latest-generation ARM Cortex-A9 take out the Intel Atom? For the most part, yes.

Alexander Tratsevskiy has announced the release of Calculate Linux 12.0, a Gentoo-based distribution for desktops and servers: "Calculate Linux 12.0 released. A while back when messing with the chromium OS development branch on my nettop i stumbled upon Aura, a Window manager for the Chromium "desktop". I put it down to Google doing their usual "trow the kitchen sink at developers and see what sticks" approach to things and left it at that. Much to my surprise i saw that Google where planning on pushing this update out to all Chromebooks and that it has already done so with to the beta branch of Chromium OS.

Gentoo released 12.1 on April Fool's Day. I included it in my jokes roundup. But the Gentoo announcement has added a message to users and jokesters today: The installer is real. I said in that post that the best jokes are the ones you almost believe. But perhaps that wasn't quite accurate. Maybe the most crafty of all are those that are real but seem like a joke. That's the sum of the Gentoo installer. A Gentoo installer is a difficult beast to construct, I understand that. At one time the very nature of Gentoo conflicted with the traditional binary installer. However, the Gentoo team has been promoting Stage 3 installs for quite some time. What is a Stage 3 install? It's the nearly complete install of a binary system from a tarball that needs to be rebuilt before adding all your goodies. So, why not have an install wizard like Sabayon?

I've always been interested in small and lightweight Linux distributions. One of the nice things about following DistroWatch regularly is that I see release announcements for distros that I may have missed, ones which may have a very different take on how to fill a given niche. PapugLinux is such a distro. It's a live CD designed to work well on legacy hardware but which also can be installed and updated.

A new version of the KDE edition has been finished. Toorox 03.2012 contains the Linux kernel 3.2.2-gentoo and the recent desktop environment, KDE 4.8.1. All packages are up-to-date. The nm-applet was replaced by the KDE NetworkManager for your network connections. Sony has reportedly submitted a filing for its first Chromebook to FCC. FCC E-filing is showing a Sony device which fits the bill of a Chromebook. Any doubt over it being a Chromebook is removed on the 'manual' page which specifically points at ChromOS.

Generally speaking, I was happy with the overall Sabayon 8.0 system contents and performance. The set of applications is almost perfect, although I would add GIMP to the distribution. The system was running quickly, responsively and correctly. Until… the issues with performance came.

Sabayon Linux is a Gentoo based distribution that is geared towards novice users and uses the lighter weighted XFCE 4.8 desktop. It is amongst the few that uses Gentoo as a base for its distribution and only one that is geared towards novice users.

I cannot say that my previous attempt to run DreamLinux was successful. It was the version 3.5, and there were issues with font size which prevented me from running any tests at all. Since then, DreamLinux team released another version of their distribution, version 5.0.
