Where Are New Tech Jobs? Answer: Red Hat

Despite the challenging U.S. economy, Red Hat sure sounds optimistic. The open source company plans to hire roughly 1,000 people in 2012. And this isn’t a pure Linux strategy. Red Hat also continues to invest in virtualization, storage, middleware and cloud computing. Here's the strategy.

Top 10 Reasons Why Larry Ellison Dislikes Red Hat

We still haven’t heard anything from David Letterman’s lawyers, so we figure he’s cool with us stealing his IP. If he sends us one of those “cease and desist” notices, we’ll just claim that the rights to the Top 10 list were given to us by NBC, who said he abandoned them when he bolted to CBS. Anyway, we’ve discovered that the list is a teeny bit funnier if you read it aloud, pretending you’re Mr. Letterman, right Paul?

Red Hat: Cloud, Virtualization Provide Path to $1 Billion

How serious is Red Hat about pushing beyond Linux? Take a look at Red Hat’s latest quarterly results, disclosed yesterday, and a cloud seminar that’s set for today. You’ll get a feel for how the open source company is striving to reinvent its business amid a march toward $1 billion in annual revenues. Here's the evidence.

The Slur “Open Core”: Toward More Diligent Analysis

Canonical, Ltd.'s new business model of choice — proprietary relicensing (once trailblazed by MySQL AB) — was also barely legitimate. In one literal sense, that's still true: it's legitimate in the sense that it doesn't violate GPL. In the sense of software freedom morality, I think proprietary relicensing harms the Free Software community too much, and that it was therefore a mistake to ever tolerate it.

The Java Mess

  • keithcu.com; By KeithCu (Posted by keithcu on Feb 21, 2011 4:14 PM EDT)
  • Groups: JBoss
Sun’s first mistake with Java was locking up the codebase, letting few see it, and letting even fewer improve it, so that today, there exists only a small community of people, outside of Sun/Oracle, who understand and are improving the core.

Red Hat is not in the same open source boat as Apache when it comes to Oracle's Java licensing.

"Philosophical issues notwithstanding, Red Hat is not in the same situation as Apache," Sharples commented. "Red Hat (and JBoss before it) is a Java licensee and the Java SE implementation we ship is based on OpendJDK and covered by the OpenJDK Community License Agreement"

Red Hat: Will SAP Acquire Linux Leader?

Rumors are swirling that SAP may acquire Red Hat. But does it make sense for SAP to acquire Red Hat's Linux, JBoss Middleware and RHEV virtualization businesses? Absolutely yes. Here's why.

Red Hat revenues swell to $209.1m

Red Hat is not as precisely coupled to the economy as many other IT players. Throughout the Great Recession, Red Hat got its brim a little wet, but it never blew off Wall Street's head and got trampled in the mud like so many other companies. And as the economy recovers, the commercial Linux operating system and JBoss middleware distributor is growing at more or less the same rate – like nothing ever happened.

Red Hat's Next Move May Involve 2 Key Investments

Red Hat already focuses on Linux, JBoss middleware and virtualization. But there are multiple signs the open source company will make a business intelligence move soon. And Red Hat’s move could involve either Jaspersoft or EnterpriseDB — or both. Here's why.

Red Hat mulls BI strategy as Oracle overloads close in on Java

Red Hat is looking to fill gaps in its increasingly burgeoning portfolio of software goodies by declaring it may soon get into the BI game. The company’s JBoss CTO Mark Little told journalists at a press event in London this morning that plans were afoot to develop software for that market. He would not be pushed, however, on whether Red Hat’s move into the Business Intelligence area would involve homegrown technology or come from a possible acquisition over the next year. “We have plans to do something in the BI space,” he said.

Developing Applications with JBoss and Hibernate

  • packtpub.com; By Francesco Marchioni (Posted by remsai10 on Jan 18, 2010 5:58 AM EDT)
  • Story Type: Tutorial; Groups: JBoss
In this article we will introduce Hibernate, which is the de facto standard object-relational mapping framework for Java applications. The Hibernate galaxy is quite large and needs a book of its own to be fully explored. Our mission will be to take over one sector of this galaxy, especially where Hibernate applications are managed by JBoss AS. In this two-part article, we will cover the following topics: * A short introduction to Hibernate * Setting up our proof of concept for the Hibernate project * Reverse engineering a database schema into Hibernate POJOs and mapping files * Deploying the application to JBoss AS * Comparing the Hibernate technology with EJB 3 persistence (JPA)

Red Hat: Linux Pays Off - And Isn't Bloated

The recession is proving to be an opportune time for Linux vendor Red Hat (NYSE: RHT) as it continues to grow revenues and earnings. According to Red Hat executives, the growth is coming at the expense of rivals and as a result of customer confidence in the abilities of Linux and Red Hat's JBoss middleware platform. The growth of Red Hat's business is not however a sign of bloat. During Red Hat's second quarter earnings investor call on Wednesday, Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst responded to an analyst question about Linux founder Linus Torvalds' comment earlier this week that Linux was bloated. "As Linux has continued to grow and its applicability continues to expand, there's just more feature functionality that people are looking for to be built into the operating system," Whitehurst said. "I don't think of that as bloat."

Red Hat HornetQ debuts for open source messaging

rom the 'What's All The Buzz About?' files: Red Hat (NYSE:RHT) today officially launched a new open source messaging system called HornetQ. The new effort has its roots in the JBoss Messaging platform, that has been around since at least 2006. In blog post, Red Hat developer Tim Fox wrote that," HornetQ is an open source project to build a multi-protocol, embeddable, high performance, clustered, asynchronous messaging system. HornetQ is an example of Message Oriented Middleware (MoM)." That's right, messaging for middleware is now MoM. I expect we'll see that acronym more over the course of what is left of 2009.

Linux chief challenges Microsoft to pony up on patents

Microsoft's earned the respect of certain sections of the open-source community for its engineering work around open-source and Linux. Specifically, its support for MySQL, PHP and JBoss on Windows and its involvement with Eclipse and Apache have been welcomed by developers and various community leaders in and around these technologies and projects.
