A Response to "What Are The Issues With Open Source Linux?"

LXer Feature: 09-Dec-2008

A point by point response to an article on Hackingalert.com entitled "What Are The Issues With Open Source Linux?" that hit our newswire yesterday.

After troublesome install, EnGarde proves it's secure

EnGarde, a GNU/Linux-based operating system produced by Guardian Digital, aims to provide a secure system that is easy to manage from anywhere. Its philosophy of including only what you need to lessen possible vulnerabilities, combined with strict SELinux application policies and default configurations tuned for security, make EnGarde an excellent base for a server -- though it's not without its problems.

2008 Security Forecast: 'Least Privilege' Engineering Will Gain Momentum

Human error and evolving phishing attacks will compel organizations to tighten control over application access, not just user access. Guardian Digital, the open source security pioneer, forecasts an increased need for comprehensive control over Internet and employee resources with 'least privilege' engineering in 2008. "Most vendors don't stress least privilege enough in their development architecture, especially with the increasing threats from human error and employee liability" says CEO Dave Wreski. "Security in 2007 has shown just how effective attackers can be at gaining authorized access to corporate resources. One of the best ways to protect against this is to lock down application access, not just user access."

Creating Snort Rules with EnGarde

LinuxSecurity.com: There are already tons of written Snort rules, but there just might be a time where you need to write one yourself. You can think of writing Snort rules as writing a program. They can include variables, keywords and functions. Why do we need to write rules? The reason is, without rules Snort will never detect someone trying to hack your machine. This HOWTO will give you confidence to write your own rules.

Knock, Knock, Knockin' on EnGarde's Door (with FWKNP)

Secret knocks have been used for purposes as simple and childish as identifying friend or foe during a schoolyard fort war. Fraternities teach these knocks as a rite of passage into their society, and in our security world we can implement this layer of security to lock down an SSH server. With this guide on FWKNP by Eckie S. (one of our own), you are taken on an easy-to-follow process of securing your platform with your own client and server port knocking set-up. Installation, iptable Rules setup, configuring access for the client and server, and everything in between. Check it out!

What to do with retval?

Return values are not just important but as age has taught me - essential. Use return values to your advantage and wrangle them when you can. Breaking things out helps, but making sure you let everyone know that you did break out some code might be just as important.

GNU/Linux -- Like No Other Hotrod, Ever

While others appear to be going backwards, Linux just keeps racing ahead.

'Linux supports more devices, "out of the box", than any other operating system ever has.'

"Yes, that's right, we support more things than anyone else. And more than anyone else ever has in the past. Linux has a very long list of things that we have supported before anyone else ever did."

Hacks From Pax: Security Enhanced Linux and Mandatory Access Control

Security Enhanced Linux, or SELinux, is an exciting security project that is reaching maturity and poised to revolutionize the way Linux security administration is performed. Originally developed by the National Security Agency and released as an open source project, but now breaking into the mainstream in Red Hat, Fedora, Gentoo, and the new release of EnGarde Secure Linux 3.0, it incorporates Mandatory Access Control into a base Linux system. This is a revolutionary advance, but is also very different from the standard Linux security model. This week in Hacks From Pax, I'll provide a basic introduction to the philosophy behind SELinux, and explain how it can add a powerful layer of security to your Linux system.
