EnGarde, a GNU/Linux-based operating system produced by Guardian Digital, aims to provide a secure system that is easy to manage from anywhere. Guardian Digital on Feb. 7 announced the release of a new stable version EnGarde Secure Community Edition, version 3.0.12. The security-oriented Linux distribution features a 2.6.19 kernel and the latest versions of several server-based applications, and is intended for use as a Web, DNS, email, database, and general Internet server.

Guardian Digital last week released an EnGarde Linux Secure Community 3.0.11 live CD, featuring a 2.6.17 kernel, several bug fixes, a number of enhancements to the Guardian Digital WebTool and the SELinux Control Console, and several new packages available for installation, the company said.

EnGarde Secure Linux is a Linux server distribution that is geared toward providing a open source platform that is highly secure by default as well as easy to administer.

EnGarde Secure Linux is a server-based distribution developed with security in mind. It comes with a minimal set of services so that the server is not unnecessarily exposed, and no superfluous software -- including no X Window-based window manager. Using a commercial TLS protocol testing suite the OpenSSL Project discovered three vulnerabilities in the OpenSSL toolkit. EnGarde Secure Linux is vulnerable to two of these these three Denial of Service (DoS) vulnerabilities.

Several buffer overflows were recently discovered in tcpdump, a program used for inspecting network traffic. By sending specially constructed packets across the wire a malicious remote attacker could cause tcpdump to crash or potentially run arbitrary code as the user under which tcpdump was being run.
