How to attend a robotics show robotically

Suitable Technologies is offering $50 rentals of its “Beam” mobile telepresence robot, so 50 robotics enthusiasts can remotely attend the RoboBusiness conference in Santa Clara, Calif. on Oct. 23-25. The Ubuntu- and ROS-based Beam will be available to the first 50 applicants, letting them explore the show at up to 1.5 meters/sec and interact with others via video conferencing.

Automotive Linux Summit agenda announced

The Linux Foundation announced the program and keynote speakers for its Automotive Linux Summit to be held Oct. 24-25 in Edinburgh, UK. The event is focused on Linux and open source technologies for in-vehicle infotainment (IVI), driver assistance, connected cars, and more, and will feature a “hacker’s lounge” where developers can test code and try new apps on a Tizen-based IVI console.

Twelve keynote videos from LinuxCon 2013

The Linux Foundation held its LinuxCon North America conference in New Orleans this week, and has once again pubished keynote session videos. The videos feature Linux luminaries including Google’s Chris DiBona, Valve’s Gabe Newell, Raspberry Pi’s Eben Upton, Intel’s Dirk Hohndel, and a panel with Tejun Heo, Greg Kroah-Hartman, Sarah Sharp, and Linus Torvalds (do sparks fly?).

Free webinar explores use of Android in embedded

The Linux Foundation announced a free Sept. 26 webinar on the “Growth of Android in Embedded Systems.” Android is increasingly being built into a wide range of consumer electronics devices and even industrial equipment where various embedded Linux distributions and real-time operating systems (RTOSes) currently rule the roost.

Oct. 2013 Euro open source conferences detailed

The nonprofit Linux Foundation announced conference programs and keynotes for LinuxCon Europe and its first CloudOpen Europe, which will be co-located with Embedded Linux Conference Europe (ELCE), the Automotive Linux Summit, and about a dozen other open source events in Edinburgh, Scotland during the week of Oct 21-25.

Tizen DevCon issues 2013 presentations list v1

After reviewing more than 160 session proposals, the program committee of Tizen Developers Conference 2013 has published the event’s preliminary list of 45 presentations. The sessions will be organized in three tracks: Tizen project, process, and progress; app development and deployment; and platform and device development.

A developer’s perspective on Google’s self-driving cars (video)

One of the most interesting sessions at last month’s Embedded Linux Conference in San Francisco was a keynote presentation about the technologies, capabilities, and challenges associated with Google’s self-driving cars, which have now traversed some 400,000 miles on public roadways. Think of it as “Prius meets The Matrix.”
