Movie Info
Captain Phillips is a multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. It is - through director Paul Greengrass's distinctive lens - simultaneously a pulse-pounding thriller, and a complex portrait of the myriad effects of globalization. The film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama's commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (two time Academy Award (R)-winner Tom Hanks), and the Somali pirate captain, Muse

The entire performance is one of the greatest in Hanks' prolific, varied career - a role that gives him a massive arc and the opportunity to show great range.
Whether or not you find it an inadvertent parable of the political moment (I do), Captain Phillips is a terrific film.
It's the work of Tom Hanks that makes this film unforgettable.
This is acting of the highest order in a movie that raises the bar on what a true-life action thriller can do.
It's some of the most powerful acting Hanks has ever done.
This is one of the year's best movies and it features Tom Hanks' strongest work in more than a decade. But it's a live wire, time bomb of a film that, when it finally releases, leaves your nerves scrambled.
A remarkable and harrowing story about modern-day piracy and understated heroism on the high seas.
From the first shot to the last, you feel that tremendous security you get when you are sure that the filmmaker is in total control of his material.
Director Paul Greengrass mixes gritty realism with some stirring military ops for an edge of the seat piracy thriller
It's also some of the most naked propaganda you'll see this side of Party Posse's "Join the Navy" from The Simpsons.
Hanks' extraordinary acting in the last few scenes, from when he's bound and trapped at gunpoint in a bobbing claustrophobic lifeboat to the finale, will earn the two-time Oscar-winner his sixth nomination.
Director Paul Greengrass and screenwriter Billy Ray have a much broader focus than one man's heroism.
This is what piracy is now really like. In truth, it was probably always like this.
Surprisingly, it's a very effective and entertaining thriller, with a few moments even better than that.
An edge-of-your-seat cat-and-mouse game for much of its running time.
Tom Hanks is in top form as the hero of this fact based drama.
Captain Phillips not just an exceptional tale of grace under pressure, but an actively engaging experience as well.
The situation is emblematic of the inequality that was the impetus for the pirates' crimes. Even in waters off the coast of their African homeland, they are as inconsequential as corks in the wake of the roused American behemoth.
An experience that feels like having a gun held to your head. Compelling, ruthless and morally challenging. An astonishing piece of work.
Nail-biting and fleet-footed (133-minute films don't go by any faster) and genuinely suspenseful even though a hugely lopsided portion of its audience already knows how things end.
This antagonistic yet somehow respectuful relationship between the two skippers gives Captain Phillips its twist: we knew to expect a white-knuckle cinematic experience from this director, but not such a uniquely challenging relationship drama too.
Something's missing: human interest.
For all its action aesthetics and nail-biting, gut-wrenching tension, this is on some level a film about globalisation, about what happens when the paths of the very poor and the very rich intersect in the crossfire of world economics.
Harrowing hijacking puts you through the wringer
I liked it, even though Hanks has a crazy accent.
If it weren't for the Greengrass/Ackroyd school of eye-crossing filmmaking, it would be even more intense and gripping, but this filmmaking duo prefer to use a hand held camera in all circumstances

This realism and complexity is given to every aspect of the story. After watching, I almost felt prepared for the day I should ever find myself on a shipping crew or kidnapped on a life-boat, heading for a foreign coastline. the spectacle on screen of the American government's mighty response to rescue this one single civilian is literally awesome. David and Goliath have nothing compared to the match-up of 4 armed young men versus 3 Navy warships and a group of Navy Seals. As we waited along with Captain Phillips for the resolution to come, I started wondering how much this operation costs and why we go to such incredible lengths to prevent the harm of citizens by a foreigner, but we as a nation focus less on ensuring the well-being of each civilian here at home.
