A full interactive preview of this year's major releases.
This week at the movies, we've got a popular boy band (the concert documentary One Direction: This Is Us), a desperate ex-racecar driver (Getaway, starring Ethan Hawke and Selena Gomez), and attorneys under surveillance (Closed Circuit, starring Eric Bana and Rebecca Hall). Jon Voight's latest movie, this weekend's Ethan Hawke/Selena Gomez thriller Getaway, has been consigned to late August oblivion -- but well before he spent summer's dog days playing an oddly accented kidnapper, Voight earned a reputation for being one of Hollywood's more talented and hard-working actors, with an eye for scripts that would challenge the audience as well as himself. Naturally, we decided to devote this week's list to an appreciation of his best-reviewed works, so without further ado...everybody's talkin' Total Recall, Jon Voight style!

This weekend, the historical drama Lee Daniels' The Butler easily won a second term as commander-in-chief of the North American box office, beating out three new releases that each opened in the single-digit millions. Forest Whitaker's White House saga declined by only 31% in its sophomore session to an estimated $17M, pushing the ten-day total to an impressive $52.3M and putting it on track to break the $100M mark and become one of the top five grossing films ever for its distributor.

This week at the movies, we've got a teenage demon-slayer (The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, starring Lily Collins and Lena Headey), a band of masked killers (You're Next, starring Sharni Vinson and Nicholas Tucci), some resilient pub crawlers (The World's End, starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost), and a desperate housewife (Blue Jasmine, starring Cate Blanchett and Alec Baldwin). What do the critics have to say?

A lot of her time is taken up with Game of Thrones these days, but Lena Headey hasn't forsaken her film career; in fact, she'll be seen in an impressive six movies (and counting) between 2013-14. One of those projects, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, is arriving in theaters this weekend, so we decided now would be the perfect time to take an appreciative look back at some of her most critically successful cinematic efforts. From quiet British dramas to Disney flicks and horror films, Lena's done a lot -- and it doesn't look like she'll be slowing down anytime soon. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the finest bits of her filmography here!
Thursday, Aug. 22 2013, 02:58 PM
The World's End marks the third and final installment in Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost's "Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy." In it, Pegg and Frost's characters return to their childhood haunt with the intention of doing a legendary pub crawl. What they don't realize is a lot has changed since they left. To celebrate the release, Grae Drake found it fitting to bestow upon the three men Official Rotten Tomatoes Pub Names.

Nicolas Cage and Vanessa Hudgens star in this true story about an Alaska State Trooper and a young runaway who work together to bring a serial killer (played by John Cusack) to justice. Grae Drake speaks to them about the claustrophobia of Alaskan winter, why criminals are as smart as lawyers, and how this story gives bakers a bad rap.

The annual late-summer funk hit the North American box office with only one of the frame's four new wide releases connecting with audiences. The potential Oscar contender Lee Daniels' The Butler surprised many with its number one opening grossing an estimated $25M. The PG-13 film averaged a strong $8,527 from 2,933 theaters and was the only wide release this weekend to gross more than $20M or generate an average above $6,000.

This week at the movies, we've got teenage superheroes (Kick-Ass 2, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Chloe Grace Moretz); a White House domestic worker (Lee Daniels' The Butler, starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey); corporate killers (Paranoia, starring Liam Hemsworth and Gary Oldman); and a tech titan (Jobs, starring Ashton Kutcher and Dermot Mulroney). What do the critics have to say?
Thursday, Aug. 15 2013, 06:07 PM
He earned his first real success by tapping into America's unquenchable thirst for broad slapstick comedy, but Jim Carrey always had bigger ambitions than anyone could have guessed by watching Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and he's proven it repeatedly by choosing projects beyond the scope of Farrelly-friendly laffers. His reach has occasionally exceeded his grasp, but few careers can boast a range extending from Dumb and Dumber to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. And with his appearance as the Colonel in Kick-Ass 2 bowing this weekend, we decided there was no time like the present to take a look at the best-reviewed films of Jim Carrey's career!
Thursday, Aug. 15 2013, 06:06 PM
In Paranoia, Liam Hemsworth trades his soul for success, diving deep into a world of secrets, uncertainty, and lies. Grae Drake talks to Harrison Ford, Amber Heard, and Hemsworth about who they would spy on, and whether or not there was competition between actors on set.

Jackson); and an unlikely teenage couple (The Spectacular Now, starring Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley). What do the critics have to say?

In his follow-up to District 9, writer/director Neill Blomkamp tells the story of a ruined Earth and a utopia rotating just out of everyone's grasp called Elysium. Matt Damon plays Max, a man determined to get there, and Sharlto Copley is the rogue agent who stands in his way. Grae Drake gets the scoop on what everyone strives for in their life. And yes, they do the robot too.

David Gordon Green's latest film stars Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch as two men in 1988 Texas dealing with each other's very different personalities as they work on a highway painting lines and posting road markers. Grae Drake sat down with Green and Hirsch to find out if Texas really appreciated all that free labor.

Dusty Crophopper is the last plane you'd ever expect to win an aerial race. He's afraid of heights, but like his voice Dane Cook, he's willing to push the envelope a little to make big things happen. Grae Drake talks to Teri Hatcher, director Klay Hall, and Cook about their greatest fears, best vacations, and what they're like on plane rides.

This weekend, Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg seized the number one spot at the North American box office with their new action thriller 2 Guns, which opened to an estimated $27.4M. Universal's seventh top spot debut of the year averaged a solid $9,045 from 3,025 locations and ended up in the mid-20s range where so many of Washington's films have opened before. It was an impressive bow given that the film was rated R, was not part of a well-known brand, and arrived as the 14th action movie of the summer. Audiences have had a plethora of choices in this genre lately and no action movie has overperformed since World War Z in mid-June.
Sunday, Aug. 04 2013, 02:46 PM
This week at the movies, we've got heavily-armed undercover agents (2 Guns, starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg) and hijinks-prone blue creatures (The Smurfs 2 with voice work from Neil Patrick Harris and Katy Perry). What do the critics have to say?

Thursday, Aug. 01 2013, 01:25 PM
Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg are the big stars of this weekend's 2 Guns, but they're not alone; the movie also boasts a solid supporting cast that includes a number of wily character actor vets -- including the one and only Bill Paxton, whose eclectic film and television pursuits have been keeping us solidly entertained for three decades and counting. To celebrate his latest role, we decided to spend this week looking back at Mr. Paxton's best-reviewed roles, and although we had to leave out at least one important cameo (hello, The Terminator) and watch one cult classic dip below the cutoff line (farewell, Weird Science), we still ended up with a mighty fine list of films. Game over, man -- it's time for Total Recall!

Hollywood's latest super hero offering took command of the box office as Hugh Jackman's return to Adamantium action in The Wolverine resulted in a number one opening. The popular Marvel character took in an estimated $55M from 3,924 locations for a solid $14,016 average. The debut was almost identical to the $55.1M debut of the franchise's last film X-Men: First Class which opened in June 2011. That summer's Thor and Captain America films bowed to about $65M a piece.

Those little blue guys are back this summer for The Smurfs 2, smurfing it up in Paris while trying to rescue Smurfette from the evil Gargamel. Grae Drake says smurf a lot to Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, and Hank Azaria, and muses about Gargamel and hors d'oeuvres.
Tuesday, Jul. 30 2013, 12:05 PM
This week at the movies, we've got an embattled mutant (The Wolverine, starring Hugh Jackman and Rila Fukushima); an uptight valedictorian (The To Do List, starring Aubrey Plaza and Johnny Simmons); and a lonely teenager (The Way, Way Back, starring Liam James and Steve Carell). What do the critics have to say?
Thursday, Jul. 25 2013, 03:27 PM
Maggie Carey wrote and directed the R-rated comedy The To Do List, and in this case, R stands for raunchy. The film's frank discussion about sexuality is mirrored in these interviews, where the stars reveal some of their most personal R-rated secrets.

He's never been a blockbuster filmmaker, but with more than a half century in Hollywood under his belt -- and dozens of movies along the way -- Woody Allen's consistently prolific output stands as a continuing testament to the ability of brainy, low-budget cinema to find an audience, even during an era in which superheroes, sequels, reboots, and remakes seem to exert an ever-stronger grip on the box office. Love him or hate him, Allen's one of the few directors left who can film people sitting around talking and turn it into a wide release -- and with his latest, Blue Jasmine, arriving in theaters this weekend, we knew now would be the perfect time to pay tribute by looking back at his best-reviewed efforts. Call your therapist, because it's time for Total Recall, Woody Allen style!
Thursday, Jul. 25 2013, 02:14 PM
This weekend, following four consecutive frames of animated sequels ruling the North American box office, horror fans returned with a vengeance powering the new supernatural thriller The Conjuring to a number one opening over a crowded weekend that saw four new releases debut in wide release. The R-rated spookfest grossed a sensational $41.5M from 2,903 locations for a sizzling $14,306 average.
Sunday, Jul. 21 2013, 04:54 PM
This week at the movies, we've got old school operatives (Red 2, starring Bruce Willis and John Malkovich), afterlife cops (R.I.P.D., starring Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds), a haunted house (The Conjuring, starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), and a speedy snail (Turbo, with voice work by Ryan Reynolds and Paul Giamatti). What do the critics have to say?
Thursday, Jul. 18 2013, 05:00 PM
From starring roles in flicks like Footloose to memorable cameos in films like JFK, Kevin Bacon has been pretty much all over Hollywood during his 35-year professional acting career, working so prolifically that he eventually inspired his own game. But until now, he's never had his own Total Recall -- so when we noticed Bacon's name in the cast list for this weekend's R.I.P.D., we knew exactly what we had to do. Everything is better with Bacon, so let's start the countdown!
Thursday, Jul. 18 2013, 01:40 PM
The Conjuring is director James Wan's latest horror film...but this time around, things are a little different. Based on the true story of the Perron family and two demonologists, Ed and Lorraine Warren, this haunted house tale will leave your blood curdling. Grae Drake gathered her courage to talk to the stars, director, and real-life demonologist to talk about things that go bump in the night.

Guillermo del Toro is doing his part this summer to help you enjoy air conditioned theaters, soda, and humongous robots fighting enormous alien monsters. Pacific Rim is his long-awaited monster flick, and Grae Drake made sure to neural-handshake her way through interviews with both del Toro and the cast.

Humor was in demand as A-list funnymen Steve Carell and Adam Sandler dominated the box office with their hit sequels Despicable Me 2 and Grown Ups 2, respectively, while the raunchy laughs of The Heat with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy also finished among the top four movies for the frame. The big-budget sci-fi actioner Pacific Rim opened in third and helped lead another weekend when ticket sales were substantially ahead of last year's.
Sunday, Jul. 14 2013, 05:44 PM
This week at the movies, we've got giant robots (Pacific Rim, starring Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba) and old buddies (Grown Ups 2, starring Adam Sandler and Kevin James). What do the critics have to say?
Thursday, Jul. 11 2013, 04:20 PM
Thursday, Jul. 11 2013, 01:30 PM
The critics might not be looking forward to Adam Sandler getting the gang back together for this weekend's Grown-Ups 2, but box office receipts don't lie -- the critics are handily outnumbered by Sandler's many ardent fans, many of whom have been laughing it up over the SNL vet's shtick for more than two decades. With another likely hit under his belt, Sandler seemed like the perfect candidate for this week's list, and the results -- while certainly filled with a few more Rotten films than your average Total Recall candidate -- include some of the biggest comedy hits in recent memory. Watch out for Bob Barker and giant penguins, and let's start the countdown!

Tuesday, Jul. 09 2013, 12:36 PM
This weekend, toon bad guy Gru dominated the box office with a gargantuan debut for his animated sequel Despicable Me 2 which drove the marketplace to a new record for the Independence Day holiday frame. Meanwhile, Johnny Depp attracted disappointing numbers to his new summer tentpole The Lone Ranger which finished in second.
Sunday, Jul. 07 2013, 01:58 PM
He once seemed destined for nothing better or worse than simple teen idolhood, but since escaping from 21 Jump Street in 1990, Johnny Depp has proven himself to be a brave (and mostly pretty astute) chooser of scripts, building an impressive filmography that encompasses everything from black-and-white arthouse fare (Dead Man) to blockbuster Disney trilogies (Pirates of the Caribbean). This weekend, he returns to theaters as Tonto in Disney's July 4 blockbuster The Lone Ranger, so we thought now would be a fine time to devote a fresh installment of Total Recall to counting down the 10 best-reviewed releases of Depp's 25-year film career. Here we go!
Wednesday, Jul. 03 2013, 04:15 PM
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Director Gore Verbinski team up with Johnny Depp once more for The Lone Ranger, adding Armie Hammer, Ruth Wilson, and William Fichtner to the mix for this summer spectacular. Grae Drake learns why she should always go full crow, not ask questions about body parts, and think twice about being deputized.

This week at the movies, we've got an attack on the executive branch (White House Down, starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx) and feuding law-enforcement officers (The Heat, starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy). What do the critics have to say?

Thursday, Jun. 27 2013, 02:57 PM
White House Down puts our nation's most important house in peril, but thankfully, Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx, and Maggie Gyllenhaal are there to save it and the people inside. They reveal what Roland Emmerich is like as a director, how their roles mirror their real lives, and then Grae Channings all over their Tatum.
Thursday, Jun. 27 2013, 12:03 PM
Audiences who turn out for White House Down this weekend will be paying for the privilege of watching director Roland Emmerich blow up an American landmark (and/or seeing Channing Tatum in a dirty tank top), but when they do, they'll be getting an added treat: An appearance by the one and only Richard Jenkins, who achieved ultimate "That Guy" status years before earning a richly deserved Best Actor Oscar nomination in 2008. Character actors don't come with much more character than Mr. Jenkins, so with all due respect to Emmerich's effects and Tatum's pecs, we knew this was the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to one of Hollywood's most distinguished supporting players. It's time for Total Recall!
Thursday, Jun. 27 2013, 12:03 PM
BONUS FOOTAGE: Discussing Jamie Foxx and Channing Tatum's highest Tomatometer scores got the pair so worked up, Channing Tatum entered into a gentleman's wager with Grae Drake on the score for White House Down. Stay tuned to the Tomatometer to find out the winner.

This week at the movies, we've got collegiate creatures (Monsters University, with voice work from Billy Crystal and John Goodman), worldwide walking dead (World War Z, starring Brad Pitt and Mireille Enos), and some juvenile jewel thieves (The Bling Ring, starring Emma Watson and Leslie Mann). Sitcom star, dependable character actor, occasional leading man -- John Goodman has basked in the glow of a number of different spotlights over the last few decades, carving out a career enviable for its versatility and sheer success as well as entertaining to watch. Whether he's making good use of his expert comic timing or lending dramatic gravitas to a scene, Goodman has become a reliable indicator of quality for whatever project he happens to be involved with -- and this weekend, given that the project in question is Pixar's Monsters University, we figured now would be the perfect time to pay tribute to Mr. Goodman with a look back at his best-reviewed films. All hail King Ralph, it's time for Total Recall!

When we all saw Monsters Inc, it left a lot of questions unanswered as to where the scaring actually began for Mike and Sully. This film answers all of those questions--and the cast continues to answer other questions, like what scared them as children or if they ever had mean teachers.
Wednesday, Jun. 19 2013, 03:27 PM
This weekend, Superman was reborn at the box office as the big-budget gamble Man of Steel paid off handsomely with a spectacular opening weekend in North America plus impressive launches overseas in only a portion of the international marketplace. The Warner Bros. summer tentpole grossed an estimated $113.1M domestically, breaking the record for the biggest June opening ever. Adding in $12M from Thursday night group sales led by Walmart's promotion for 7:00pm shows, the total stood at a stellar $125.1M. The Friday-to-Sunday portion for the PG-13 film averaged a muscular $26,879 from 4,207 theaters including 331 IMAX screens. Toy Story 3 held the June record since 2010 with $110.3M.

What did you do during your last vacation? Between the production and post-production of The Avengers, Joss Whedon decided to direct an adaptation of the Shakespearian rom-com-dram Much Ado About Nothing. Using a hand-picked cast from nearly every production he has ever been a part of, such as TV shows Dollhouse, Firefly, and Angel to name a few, he invited everyone over to his home, picked up a digital camera and some local cupcakes, and made a film. When we asked him about his Five Favorite Films, their influence on his films added another nuance to his numerous projects.
Friday, Jun. 14 2013, 04:10 PM
This week at the movies, we've got the return of Superman (Man of Steel, starring Henry Cavill and Amy Adams), an apocalyptic laugh-riot (This Is the End, starring James Franco and Seth Rogen), and a one-of-a-kind love affair (Before Midnight, starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy). What do the critics have to say?

Thursday, Jun. 06 2013, 04:20 PM
Indie classics, animated hits, well-reviewed dramas, and blockbuster comedies: Owen Wilson has done it all. But one thing he's never starred in is his very own Total Recall, so when we noticed that he'd be reuniting with his old Wedding Crashers buddy Vince Vaughn in this weekend's The Internship, we knew we needed to rectify the situation with a fond look back at some of the many critical highlights from Mr. Wilson's varied filmography. It's time to pay tribute to the man who brought Marmaduke to life, Total Recall style!
Thursday, Jun. 06 2013, 03:58 PM

The action sequel Fast & Furious 6 held onto the top spot at the North American box office despite decelerating sharply and facing off against competition from a pair of new releases. But it was Will Smith who crashed and burned as his big-budget sci-fi action pic After Earth was rejected by paying moviegoers proving that the once-bulletproof star is no longer invincible. In fact, it was beaten out for the number two spot by the magician heist thriller Now You See Me which posted a strong debut beating expectations.
Monday, Jun. 03 2013, 01:05 PM
If you were asked to name one actor capable of playing ex-cons, hitmen, and God, you'd be hard pressed to do any better than Morgan Freeman -- which is, probably not coincidentally, why he's played all those characters (among many others) over the course of his distinguished, nearly 50-year career. And even as he reaches the half-century mark as a professional actor, Freeman shows no signs of slowing down; in fact, this weekend's Now You See Me is just one of an incredible six films he's slated to appear in this year. All of which explains why we were shocked and appalled to realize we'd never given Mr. Freeman the Total Recall treatment, and knew we needed to seize upon this opportunity to repent. Hey you guys, it's time for Total Recall!
Thursday, May. 30 2013, 01:03 PM
This week at the movies, we've got a father and son on an interplanetary mission (After Earth, starring Will and Jaden Smith) and a group of bank-robbing magicians (Now You See Me, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Mark Ruffalo). What do the critics have to say?

Thursday, May. 30 2013, 03:59 PM

In the process of peeking behind the curtain of their illusionist ways, she gets playing cards chucked at her head, hypnotizes The Hulk, and has her mind invaded by the white man who can't jump.

What do the critics have to say?

Thursday, May. 23 2013, 01:13 PM
Two of this week's major releases (Fast & Furious 6 and The Hangover Part III) skew toward an older crowd, but there's still a little something in multiplexes for the whole family: Epic, a fantasy adventure with voice work from Amanda Seyfried, Josh Hutcherson, and Beyonce Knowles. Read on to find out more.
Thursday, May. 23 2013, 01:22 PM
Before he was an Oscar-nominated star of The Silver Linings Playbook, Bradley Cooper was one of Hollywood's go-to guys for the sort of rakishly smarmy character that every truly great R-rated comedy really needs -- comedies like, say, The Hangover, which shifted Cooper's career into high gear in 2009. This week, as the Hangover trilogy prepares for its presumably Jeong-filled conclusion, we're taking a moment to look back at some of the critical highlights from his filmography -- and given that he only made his cinematic debut a little over 10 years ago, those highlights are more numerous (and more diverse) than you might think. These days, cancellation isn't necessarily the end for a television series; between DVD sales, the Web, and the ever-expanding cable dial, if a show has a fervent enough fanbase, odds are someone is going to come along to take advantage of it. Such was not the case 40 years ago, however ? not that it mattered to diehard Star Trek fans, who so impressed Paramount with their passion for Gene Roddenberry's characters that the studio brought the property to theaters a full decade after the show was unceremoniously dumped by NBC. Three decades later, as we prepare to greet the twelfth Trek feature, your pals at Rotten Tomatoes thought now would be the perfect time to take a fond look back at all the Enterprise voyages that got us here ? from the beloved classics (The Wrath of Khan) to the ones that never should have made it off the holodeck (The Final Frontier). Where does your favorite rank? Read this week's Total Recall to find out!

This weekend, superhero love kept Iron Man 3 in the number one spot for a second weekend in a row while the lavish period saga The Great Gatsby overperformed in second place offering effective counter-programming. Until recently, multi-talented Canadian filmmaker Sarah Polley was probably best known for her early work on the TV series Road to Avonlea and later for roles in films like The Sweet Hereafter, Go, and Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead remake. More recently, however, Polley has earned widespread acclaim for her two directorial efforts, 2007's Away from Her and last year's Take This Waltz. Polley continues her impressive work behind the camera this week in Stories We Tell and took some time to chat with RT, but first, she gave us her Five Favorite Films.

Tony Stark obliterated the competition as the much-anticipated super hero sequel Iron Man 3 generated the second biggest opening weekend in box office history and also became the top-grossing global blockbuster of 2013. Domestic audiences spent a jaw-dropping $175.3M this weekend, according to estimates, seeing the third installment in the Marvel franchise including grosses from Thursday night shows starting at 9:00pm. Playing in 4,253 theaters, the PG-13 actioner averaged a scorching $41,218 per location and was helped by surcharges for the 3D conversion.

With more than 50 movies listed in his filmography, Iron Man 3 star Robert Downey, Jr. has obviously had his share of ups and downs, but we'd argue that the positives outnumber the negatives; in fact, the lowest-rated film on the top 10 we assembled for this week's Total Recall boasts an 83 percent Tomatometer rating. With so many well-reviewed films jostling for a spot, there are bound to be some surprising omissions, as well as a few obscure inclusions -- so what say we get down to business and find out what they are by taking a look at the cream of the crop, shall we?
