Note: Due to a high frequency of spam, we have temporarily restricted access to the Wiki. If you want to post a Wiki or make edits to the Wiki, please email Arikia_Millikan(at)wired(dot)com with the subject: How-To Wiki.

Anyone can contribute new articles to the Wired How-To Wiki, and anyone can edit any existing page. Before you jump in and start editing, familiarize yourself with the ground rules:

  • Only registered users can create and edit pages. If you already have a Wired.com user ID, you can use that to log in. If you don't have a Wired.com user ID, you can create one. Your user ID will be associated with information you post or modify.
  • Article titles should begin with an action verb: Build, Hack, Modify, Rule, Cheat. Article titles should never begin with "How To" -- we take care of that for you.
  • Wiki pages can be edited by anyone. With a few exceptions, this is true for every page on this site. If you don't want others to edit and improve your work, don't put it here.
  • We use MediaWiki's open-source publishing software. Please consult the online guide if you need help.

Tips for Creating New Pages

Here are some suggestions to keep in mind when you're building and editing pages on the Wired How-To Wiki.

Format Properly

When you create a new page or article, formatting guides for headlines and text appear automatically. If you need help formatting your text, there's a link to MediaWiki's text formatting guide just below the Edit text field.

Use Images

You also have the ability to upload images to illustrate your How-To's steps, so use it! Photographs, screenshots, illustrations -- all of these things help.

Don't Abuse Reversions

Each wiki page allows you to compare recent changes or simply revert back to the last incarnation of that particular page. Please discuss the reasons for reverting in the comments forum before reverting. If a user is found to be abusing the reversion process (e.g., more than 3 reversions in 24 hours of the same How-To article), that user will be blocked from the site indefinitely.

Use Tags

Tags help readers find your article through our search tool and by browsing related wiki articles which cover topics similar to yours. Tag your How-To with the appropriate keywords whenever possible. Other registered users of the wiki can also add and edit tags at any time.

Report Inappropriate Content

Profanity and copyrighted content are not allowed on the Wired How-To Wiki. Abusive attacks against persons or companies are also not allowed. Though we will do our best to keep inappropriate content off the wiki, we need all the eyes we can get. If you see inappropriate content, send a page link to howinappropriate@wired.com.
