Sony has been showing off its Bloggie 3D camcorder ahead of its imminent retail launch in the UK. The 3D camcorder was on show at its Christmas Crackers event in Mayfair last week. Sony says the Bloggie 3D MHS-FS3 camcorder is "capable of shooting magical 3D footage as well as stunning still photos and stereo sound".
Retail launch imminent for $249 videocam
The video camera is one of the first such consumer-level camcorders to go onsale in the UK. So far, 3D products capable of capturing video have largely been restricted to professional grade video cameras. An expensive exception was the c£1,000 Panasonic HDC-SDT750.
The Bloggie 3D creates footage that is compatible with a 3D HDTV for which 3D glasses are required. However, users can preview their footage on the Bloggie’s 2.4in LCD screen without needing any such glasses!
A separate 360-degree lens can be used to take a panoramic shot of your entire surroundings. The camcorder has a built-in USB arm for transferring footage to a PC, from where it can be uploaded to Flickr, Facebook or You Tube at the touch of a button.
The Sony Bloggie 3D was announced at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and went onsale in the US in January. It costs $249 (£156) in the US, but at Amazon UK it is listed for £219. However, the Bloggie 3D is not yet on general sale in the UK. A quick scan of e-tailers offering
The Bloggie 3D has 8GB internal memory, a 5Mp camera, the ability to record HD Mpeg4 video at 1920x1080p and a 2.4in LCD on which to play back the results.
Aiptek brought out a 3D camcorder in a similar vein to the Sony Bloggie 3D last year. This model is currently available from gadget site Firebox.com for £117 (it launched last October for £180). Medion also offers a 3D camcorder via its online store for £99.
LG and HTC recently launched 3D-enabled versions of their smartphones, while Apple is strongly rumoured to be adding 3D to the next generation of iPhone.
