Tamagotchi were a huge craze when they were first introduced back in 1997 and now they’re back in the Tamagotchi L.i.f.e. app that has just released on iOS. The game has been available on Android for about a month and has already reached over 600,000 downloads.

The app offers two different ways to play the game. You can go old-school and play in the black and white Toy mode which is just like the 16-bit original with pixelated characters or you can go for the more modern App mode.

In App mode you’ll get full color and higher resolution. You’ll also be able to collect virtual pets and play a “Rock, Paper, Scissors” minigame with your pets. The minigame is not only fun but helps increase your pet’s happiness.

The app is part of the Tamagotchi L.i.f.e. (Love Is Fun Everywhere) brand initiative and the “Hometown Heroes” program launched back in November 2012. The program allows anyone to nominate an individual who they believe is making a difference in their community.

Carole Pearson of The Dawg Squad was the program’s inaugural winner for her non-profit animal rescue center. She received a $5,000 donation to continue her efforts helping animals. Nominations are currently open for the next winner who will be selected at the end of April.

The Tamagotchi L.i.f.e app is available as a free download for iPad or iPhone supported by ads or for $0.99 in an ad free for life version.
