IndieCade 2013's Night Games are inventive, goofy fun

IndieCade 2013's Night Games are glorious, goofy fun
IndieCade isn't just a huge celebration of independent game development, it's also a street festival designed to appeal to all types of people, not just those who enjoy traditional video games. Enter Night Games, a special IndieCade event featuring lots of big, physical games designed to be played in the dark. That includes everything from the rhythmic, Kinect-powered Soundodger Live to The Hearst Collection, a life-sized recreation of a museum art heist, complete with laser security grid.

Head past the break for a video rundown of our favorite Night Games, which turned out to be one of the highlights of the entire IndieCade festival.

Take a video tour of IndieCade 2013

IndieCade 2013 took place in Los Angeles over the weekend, and the festival played host to countless independently developed projects, ranging from traditional video games to more physical, hands-on installations. That means everything from Shovel Knight to Edgar Rice Soirée, a bizarre game played entirely with dangling PlayStation Move controllers.

You'll spot both games in our video tour of the IndieCade festival, along with Quadrilateral Cowboy, which won IndeiCade's Grand Jury Prize, and the indie arcade game Killer Queen. You'll even see yours truly donning a virtual reality suit for the self-explanatory Project Holodeck.

Check out the video, and stay tuned to Joystiq, where we'll be publishing our IndieCade coverage throughout the week.

Blue Estate jumps from comic book pages to Leap Motion

Blue Estate is a first-person, on-rails shooter controlled with the player's hovering pointer finger, coming to PC via the Leap Motion Controller. The prologue is expected in the Leap Motion store "soon."

Players control Tony Luciano, a bumbling, sarcastic mob boss from the Blue Estate comic series published by Image. The game takes place in the comic's world, complete with violent gun fights, humor in questionable taste, crime and strippers. With Leap Motion, players point a finger at the screen, over the controller box, and hover over enemies to shoot. Other simple gestures, such as swiping that finger down, make Tony reload or take cover.

Blue Estate comes from HeSaw, a new indie studio based in France and composed of former Ubisoft and Darkworks employees, with series creator Viktor Kalvachev as creative director. At Gamescom, HeSaw told Joystiq that Blue Estate is in the vein of Quentin Tarantino or Guy Ritchie films, and it will eventually hit PlayStation 3's Move and Xbox 360 Kinect. There's no deal yet for next-gen systems.

Octodad: Dadliest Catch will include PS Move support on PS4

Octodad: Dadliest Catch will feature PlayStation Move support on PS4, developer Young Horses announced during Sony's PlayStation Indie Arcade event at PAX Prime. Players opting to use motion control when guiding the game's octopus father will only need one Move controller to do so. The game will still be playable with the Dual Shock 4 controller, if waving your arm to control virtual tentacles isn't your idea of fun.

Octodad: Dadliest Catch was announced for PS4 during Sony's E3 press briefing in June. The first Octodad launched on PC in 2010.
