The Verge Book Club Podcast: 'Ship Breaker' with Paolo Bacigalupi

Book Club

It's a fast-paced, thoughtful story about family, environmental disaster, and parasailing clipper ships. A month later, Adi and Laura sat down with the book's author, Paolo Bacigalupi. Among other things, Bacigalupi is known for The Windup Girl, which won the Hugo and Nebula...

Pinterest will start telling users where their favorite photos came from in Getty partnership

via puu.sh

Pinterest is working to fix one of the most persistent problems on its network: the difficulty of tracking down the source of a given photo. The company has announced a partnership with Getty Images that gives it access to Getty's substantial metadata collection, allowing it to run reverse image searches and pull out the photographer, the date and location of the image, and any descriptive text. Pinterest also says that it's "just getting started" with Getty, which suggests more features down the line.

Pinterest describes the partnership as a way to give users better information about what they're pinning. In the example above, it says it could tell someone that the ambiguous dish above is scallops and brussels sprouts, then suggest related recipes and give them the original source of the image. Why are editors leaving the world's biggest encyclopedia?

via farm7.staticflickr.com

Is Wikipedia in decline? At Technology Review, Tom Simonite says the site's base of editors has been declining since 2007, when it peaked at 51,000 — this summer, it was at 31,000. As the project has grown, so has the bureaucracy, and Wikipedia is almost uniformly seen as unwelcoming to new editors. Wikimedia executive director Sue Gardner has undertaken a project to make the interface, and by extension the site, less intimidating, but some...
