Pokemon X & Y, the latest pair of releases in the popular Nintendo RPG series, have sold more than 4 million units since they launches worldwide last week.

This was the first ever Pokemon game to launch on a global scale simultaneously -- Pokemon titles usually launch in Japan first, before hitting Europe and the U.S. months later.

However, Nintendo noted that when the Japanese, U.S. and European launch sales of past Pokemon titles are gathered together, Pokemon X & Y are tracking ahead of the previous titles in the series, Black & White 2, by a notable 70 percent.

Pokemon X & Y are now also the fastest-selling Nintendo 3DS games to date, Nintendo added.

GameFreak's Pokemon franchise has now sold 245 million games worldwide to date, and Nintendo provided additional global sales figures for previous titles in the series, as seen below.

Pokemon Diamond & Pearl - 17.63 million sales
Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire - 16.22 million sales
Pokemon Black & White - 15.42 million sales
Pokemon HeartGold & SoulSilver - 12.67 million sales
Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen - 12 million sales

Handheld consoles are dead. Long live handheld consoles.

It's funny how some people are saying "it didn't sell as much as GTA5; it failed" ...I think what should be kept in mind is that Pokemon X&Y; probably cost a fraction of what it took to develop GTA5, and could very well be making a better return on investment (percentage-wise) for all we know.

They are also forgetting that Pokemon has a longer tail than GTA 5 will have. So while GTA 5 has probably already sold the vast majority of its copies, Pokemon will continue selling strongly for many months.

Also approx 1/4 the sales on 1/4 the install base is actually a pretty positive comparison. Factor in the shorter timescale, lower marketing costs, higher margins and some chance of a 'fatter' tail and it's pretty hard to spin this as a negative.

Not to mention it's like saying "Lord Of The Rings was not even as big as Ben Hur! Worst MOVIE EVER!!!!" (I mean maybe LoTR was bigger but I'm just using an illustration).

@David.

Pokemon is for surely making a better return on investment than GTA5. And sales don't end with pre-orders like they do with most 360/PS3 games. It will sell well into next year and beyond until the next one is released.

And please ignore the random internet poster you says such stuff. Anyone can say anything. Not enough time in the day to try and reason with every internet moron.

I'm about halfway through Shin Megami Tensei IV at the moment and don't like picking up new games until I have time to dedicate to them, so I'm putting Pokemon X & Y off for now, but it's definitely hard. I expected the massive success of those sales numbers, and I completely expect X & Y to be great when I finally get around to playing for myself.

So much for Nintendo being "outdated" and "boring" and "pointless" and "not knowing how to make games that sell".

Those are all things I've heard people say about Nintendo in the past couple of months - mainly referring to the WiiU.

Nintendo is still sailing strong. The new Pokemon is making me seriously consider buying a 3DS - or maybe a 2DS, because I'm a poor student and it's cheaper.
