The Kurinji flower blossoms every 12 years only. It blossomed last time at 1982. Thereafter, Now the Kurinji flowers are shown in various places in Kodaikanal. In the slope of coakers walk, there are lot of Kurinji flowers are present now. #9; So like this with its special features the "Princess of Hill stations". The meanings of the name Kodaikanal

In Tamil, there are four versions are defined to the name "Kodaikanal". It's interested but it is not known who invented this name. The word Kodaikanal is classified into two words as Kodai and Kanal. Here "KANAL" means in tamil that the dense forest or the closed forest. Then "KODAI" has four different meanings. With it's meanings Kodaikanal meaned in four ways.

By pronounsating with long tamil 'O' and KO....DI means "the end". So that KO...DI KANAL means "THE END OF THE FOREST" on that days, Kodaikanal is situated at the end part of the thick forest. Now-a-days it's developed but the beauty is still kept.

    By pronounsating with short tamil 'O' as KODI means "THE CREEPERS". So that Kodaikanal means " THE FOREST OF CREEPERS". They called like this with its beauty.

    By pronounsating with long tamil 'O' as KO....DAI means that the "THE SUMMER". So KO...DAI KANAL means "THE FOREST FOR THE SUMMER". Yes, Kodaikanal is a summer forest.

    By pronounsating with short tamil 'O' as KODAI means that "THE GIFT". So that 'KODAIKANAL' means "THE GIFT OF FOREST" Kodaikanal was created by the forest and it surroundings. So it's a gift of forest.

The maximum temperature during summer is 19.8°c and during winter it is17.3°c. The minimum temperature varies from 11.3°c to 8.3°c. The mean humidity is 70.2%, which varies from 61.6% to 96.8%. The seasonal climate conditions are moderate and the weather is uniformly salubrious.

Rain Fall

The town gets major rainfall during the south west monsoon period. The Annual normal rainfall varies from 300 mm to 800 mm. The average annual rainfall being received in the town is 770 mm.

Nature of Soil

The major group of soils that are found in the town are black and red varieties. The red soil constitutes 90 percent while black soil only 10 percent.
