Only a generation later, he was largely relegated to obscurity. Schneider was doubtlessly a major figure in the German art world in his day.
Yet what looks to our modern eyes like Schneider's frank homoeroticism was hardly framed as such in his own day. Rather, his work was taken as the literal embodiment of a virile masculinity and thus as an entirely orthodox framing of the male body's purview. This first US exhibition examines not only Schneider’s art, but also the strange cultural phenomenon that caused his dramatic rise and fall.
