Dell has refreshed its XPS laptop range with upgraded screens and Intel Haswell processors. Here's our Dell XPS 13 and XPS 15 hands-on review.

The new XPS range looks sleek with a stylish combination of aluminium and carbon fibre. They're thin and light Ultrabooks which deserve some attention on this front at least. The 13 in model is 6-19 mm and starts at 1.36 kg, according to Dell.

Dell also announced the XPS 11 which is an interesting product. It's got a 360 degree design like Lenovo's Yoga range where the tablet is detachable from the keyboard. Unfortunately we didn't get to see this in the flesh so we'll focus on the XPS 13 and XPS 15.

Dell XPS 13

The XPS 13 offers a 13.3 in display in an 11 in form factor. It's an IPS panel so viewing angles should be good and it has a Full HD 1080p resolution. Touch is an option if you will make use of Windows 8 gestures and touch-enabled apps.

Unfortunately the screen which we looked at wasn't the correct one so the poor brightness we witnessed won't be an issue on the final model we're told.

Dell has equipped the XPS 13 with a fourth-generation Intel Haswell processor. You can choose a Core i3, i5 or i7. Interestingly, Dell will sell the XPS 13 with Ubuntu as an alternative to Windows 8.1 – if that floats your boat.

Dell XPS 15

If a 13 in laptop just isn't big enough for your needs then the XPS 15 might suit. As the name suggests, it has a 15.6 in display which also comes in touch and non-touch varieties. To rival the Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus it has a QHD+ resolution of 3200 x 1800.

Dell XPS 15 QHD+ display

Like the XPS 13, it comes with up to an Intel Haswell Core i7 processor but has dedicated nVidia graphics on-board. There's also up to 16 GB of RAM and we'll provide you with some benchmark results when we get our review sample.

There is plenty of storage available with a 1TB hard drive with a 32 GB SSD alongside it. Other specs include Waves MaxxAudio Pro audio, an HD webcam and optional NFC.

Dell XPS 15 ports

As with any laptop, you're going to want to know how much it costs before you shell out. We're still waiting for this information so we'll update you as soon as we have it.
