On the basis of the Household Budget Survey, the largest percentage of the poor in 2008 was in the category of the unemployed – 19.3%. The percentage of the poor in urban areas is significantly lower than in other areas.
Poverty by type of household:
The households with six and more family members are the most vulnerable; their poverty index being above the population average and the highest relative to other demographic groups. Still, as compared to the data of the Household Budget Survey, the percentage of the poor households with six or more family members has decreased from 13.5% to 10.9% in the period 2007/2008. The increase in percentage of poor is observed among three, four and five-member households. Furthermore, the lowest percentage of the poor is observed in households with three and four members.
Indicators of poverty by sex and marrital status of the head of household indicate the highest share of the poor single persons, and the highest percentage of the poor female-headed households – 8.3% as compared to male-headed households- 7.8%. Also, relative to 2007 data, an increase of the poor female-headed households is observed (7.5% in 2007.).
Poverty and socio – economic status of the head of household:
The greatest increase of the percentage of poor relative to 2007 is recorded among the housholds headed by an unemployed person – from 10.3% to 19.3%. The highest percentage of the poor lived in households where the head of household is inactive - students, housewifes, etc, and not a pensioner (20.8%) and unemployed (19.3%).
Poverty by age:
The majority of poor is located in the category of children up to the age of 13 and the elderly population – aged 65 + and this amounts to 10.1%. As compared to the situation in 2007, the profile of poverty has not changed as the greatest percentage of the poor was also among these two categories in 2007 too.
