Understanding Facebook…Again

Wondering what is new for Facebook these days?  Well, here you go!

First, let’s start with the controls.  What are all the new(ish) ways Facebook has provided you for sorting Company Pages’ News and Status Updates from your Facebook Friends in 2013?  What exactly does each one do and why?

Which ones are useful to you and which ones are probably only there to help Facebook?

Your Name:  Click here and you’re directed to your own Facebook wall.   But what’s important to you about this?  Well, it’s the icon next to your name i.e. the lock.

Facebook’s lock icon is a quick way for you to see and adjust your Facebook privacy.  While some might claim “Facebook privacy” is an oxymoron, we geeks beg to differ.  It’s more a matter of keeping up on Facebook’s constantly changing privacy policy in addition to a constantly changing set of privacy related user interface options.  (Yes.  There is a difference.)

What Matters To You About The Lock Icon Next To Your Name? When hovered over, it allows you to easily see “Who can see my stuff?’ “Who can contact me?” as well as other privacy related concerns. Click on “More” and you’re directed to the Facebook Privacy Settings page where you have additional options like those displayed here.  We geeks HIGHLY recommend you take the time to click and set each and every one.

News Feed Click here and you see Status Updates from your Facebook Friends, “Suggested Pages” (a type of paid ad from businesses) but it’s mixed with anything posted by pages that you “Like”.

What Matters To You About Facebook’s News Feed When You See a “Suggested Page”? You have options. You can “Like” the page or you can “Hide” it. The choices you make here factor into Facebook’s algorithm and impact what other Suggested Pages you see in your News feed in the future. (We’re not going to get into Facebook’s algorithm in this article. That’s a worm hole for another day.)

Messages Click here and (thankfully nothing has changed!) read and reply to your private messages. Other options for your Private Messages are available.

Events Click on Events lately? If you haven’t, you may be in for a surprise. One of the advertising options for businesses on Facebook is “Suggested Events” and these are shown in your News Feed. Here’s an example. One of us geeks received these. Do you think it’s due to some recent online activity about visiting San Diego, the San Diego Zoo and more? Privacy on Facebook means privacy from people, not privacy from Facebook!

Yes, you’ll still see your friends’ birthdays. Yes you’ll still see events you’ve been invited to by your Facebook friends and yes you’ll still see all the events that Company pages you “Like” have created—so don’t worry.

Need to know more about your Find Friends, Company Pages (for admins), Notes, App Center, and More? Yeah… We’ll get to those later.
