Just like words and actions, color is an important component of communication. Color dramatically impacts your mood and your behavior, and more importantly how a person reacts to your business. Many studies have been conducted on the psychology of color, all by people smarter than this geek. I often refer to these findings when advising clients on a color palette for their business. Color is all around us and while we might not think about it in detail, color evokes feelings.

So why do we so-called social media experts “eat our young” (e.g., beat-up on each other so often) if we’re so fantasticablulous? Well, because we’re not. Fantastic or fabulous that is. How can anybody be an expert in something this new that changes every 24 hours? It’s impossible.

During the recent Waste Management strike here in Puget Sound, we geeks spent two full days watching the WM Facebook page. This is geek research real-time at its finest. Say what you will about America’s largest garbage/recycling company, it (or it’s social media agency) exhibited best practices all across the board on Facebook.

Purporting to be a “Social Media Expert” isn’t unusual in the marketing world. It has been part of the game for a few years now. But as social media’s relevance reaches an all-time high, these bold claims of social media expertise have become increasingly more dangerous to clients. Why? Because traditional marketing backgrounds and traditional agency experience have nothing to do with digital expertise as a whole -- and they especially have nothing to do with being a social media expert.
