Several local collegiate teams are making some noise as the non-conference part of the schedule wraps up.

University of Portland Pilots
Beaverton, Oregon native and Timbers U-23 forward Jaime Velasco scored twice on Thursday night as the Pilots took down Oregon State University 3-0 at Merlo Field. Velasco’s first goal game in the 42nd minute to break a 0-0 draw. Teammate Eddie Sanchez doubled the score in the 59th and Velasco wrapped up the scoring in the closing seconds. The win puts the Pilots at 4-2-0 on the season.

On the women’s side, the Pilots senior Micaela Capelle scored twice on Sunday as the Pilots came back from 1-0 to defeat the Missouri Tigers 3-2 at Merlo Field. The #16 Pilots women are now 5-1-1 on the season as they head south to take on the San Diego State Aztecs on Sunday.

Both Pilots teams will return to Merlo Field on Friday, September 27, as part of a Pilots double-header. The men will face the Denver Pioneers at 4:30 p.m., and the women will play Wyoming following that game.

University of Oregon
Junior goalkeeper Abby Steele was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week after shutting out No. 6 BYU through regulation and two overtime periods on Thursday at Pape Field in Eugene. The Ducks host San Francisco in Eugene on Friday night at 7 p.m.

Oregon State University
The men’s team dropped a road game to the Pilots on Thursday, putting them at 5-2-0 on the season. The Beavers return home on Sunday to host San Jose State at 1 p.m.

The women’s team lost a closely contested 1-0 battle to Gonzaga in Spokane on Sunday. They have one final non-conference game remaining before beginning Pac-12 play. The Beavers host Cal Poly in Corvallis at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Portland State University
Sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Plese was named Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week after making a career-high 10 saves in the Vikings 2-0 win over Hawaii. The Vikings host San Francisco on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Hillsboro Stadium.

Winning Instagram from August by @marshmueller

A Friday night match means an unusual, weekday opportunity to win the Stumptown Coffee Roasters Instagram contest.

Stumptown Coffee Roasters want to know what your ritual is. Will you wear your Timbers jersey to work? Are you going to drink your morning Stumptown from your Timbers coffee mug? Are you going to call in sick to get to JELD-WEN Field early?

Throughout the 2013 season, the Portland Timbers and Stumptown Coffee Roasters are asking fans to share their pre-game rituals for the first home match of every month. All you have to do is Instagram a shot of your morning pregame ritual and share it with the hashtag #SCRTimbers.

One random fan will be selected each month to win a prize pack from Stumptown and the Timbers that includes:

  • One (1) Signed Timbers Jersey
  • One (1) 12oz bag of Kenya Gaturiri Coffee
  • Two (2) Stumptown Coffee Roaster Mugs
  • One (1) Stumptown Branded Red Rooster Hand Mill Grinder

Last month, @marshmueller won the Stumptown & Timbers prize pack for this Instagram of her son and his handmade Cascadia cape. For full contest rules, click here.

Last month, KeyBank asked, "What would you do with $1,000?" And boy, did you let us know. With numerous entries all posted and tagged on Instagram and Twitter with the hashtag #PTFC1K, it was tough to choose.

The $1,000 grand prize winning entry came from Instagram user @chelele who plans on using the money to help pay for costly surgery.

Our fourth weekly $250 winner comes from Twitter user @kldamassa who says she would use the money to spend more family time at JELD-WEN Field.

Our previous three winners were @erikmartinkeating, @ali_bella1, and @kjhaltz. Thanks for all the fantastic submissions and see all the winners below:

The USMNT is back in action tonight as they take on Costa Rica in World Cup Qualifying (7pm PT, beIN Sport). Currently sitting atop the group with 13 points, the Yanks are eager to further distance themselves from the second place Ticos who lay two points behind on 11.

Gamesmanship has run high all week in the lead-up to the match with reports that the Costa Rican authorities wouldn't provide training soccer balls, cow mascots interrupting Jurgen Klinsmann press conferences and much more all as a kind of payback for the memorable snow game qualifier on U.S. soil in Colorado. In near whiteout conditions. The USMNT defeated Costa Rica 1-0 back in March and Costa Rica protested bitterly about the blizzard-like conditions.

MLSsoccer.com has their new ¡Golazo! matchcenter all set with innovative stats and coverage. Get set for the game here.

KICKTV's excellent series on qualification, aptly named The Hex, has traveled to San Jose, Costa Rica to witness the proceedings. It should be a great match.

Meet Denisse C.
Denisse was the Spread the Love packet recipient for the Portland Timbers vs. FC Dallas match on August 17th. Cristina Calderon, her big sister from Big Brothers Big Sisters, nominated her.

"I have known her since I was 14 years old," said Denisse of her big sister Christina. "She has been there for me every step of the way since then."

Denisse says she was shocked when she received her welcome packet.

“I was so happy to know that everyone that she knew she picked me to go and watch a soccer game,” she said.

This was Denisse’s first soccer game and she says she was most looking forward to experiencing the electric atmosphere at JELD-WEN Field in person as opposed to television. The environment did not disappoint. Denisse said the atmosphere at the stadium was her favorite part of the game.

Meet Elvis K.
Elvis was the Spread the Love packet recipient for the Portland Timbers vs. Vancouver Whitecaps match on August 3rd. He was nominated by friend and former coworker Sara Treadway.

Elvis says he felt “overwhelming joy to receive the Timbers welcome packet and tickets to the game.” The last game he went to was three years ago, adding that he tried to get tickets this year but they were sold out. This time he got to bring his sons. He said his favorite part of the game was Ryan Johnson’s second-half header.

23 August 2:53 pm

As part of our inaugural group of ticket holders, Dan and Teresa won the chance to have a VIP experience for the Portland Timbers vs. Real Salt Lake match on August 21st, including KeyBank Club seats, and a chance to visit with Timber Joey on the field!

We asked Dan a few questions after the match.

What was your first memory of/first match supporting the Timbers?

It was a USL game when you could go down to the beer garden on the field to get beer and watch the game. Gavin Wilkinson was playing as the toughest defender on the field and I thought it was great to be so close and to see great soccer like I was on the field with them. The ball would even fly in to knock over a beer or table once in a while.

What was your favorite moment of the match tonight?

When Kalif Alhassan scored in the 86th minute! We thought we would win for sure but the 6 minutes of extra time was enough for RSL to score a heartbreaking to tie which was of course, the least favorite moment.

Who would you nominate as Player of the Match?

Diego Valeri for his assist, penalty kick and all-around excellent play in the midfield.

What is your prediction for the next match – Timbers versus Seattle Sounders?

It will be a difficult game because Seattle is scratching and scraping for points to climb up the table. The Timbers will be hungry for a win but tired for the 3rd game in only one week. I would love to see Futty play because he knows how much a Cascadia Cup game means but I feel that Wallace has found his stride again and the defense will be putting out extra effort to keep us in the game. I'm looking for a 2 to 1 win that will be another tense squeaker, including a late goal for the Timbers to win!

What else should we know about your Timbers fandom? Any gameday superstitions? Favorite pieces of Timbers memorabilia? Feedback about your Axe experience?

We bought our season ticket seats with two other families and sit together for games in section 113. I am still trying to find the perfect clothing combination for wins but I know that where ever I am on game day, I must wear some Timbers gear! My favorite item is my Timbers cap that now has autographs from Futty, Jack, Alvas, Silvestre, and Rashawn on the bill thanks to our lucky night as Axe Society Members of the Match! We loved the experience and were flattered by all the personal attention that the staff gave to us. Our seats we great but a little crowded with loiterers standing behind us and even in our seats for the center field view. I can hardly blame them; it was a great place to watch the game. It was great that both my wife and I could come together since it was our 19th wedding anniversary the night before on the 20th. It has been a wonderful week. Thanks so much for the opportunity and the special hospitality Chris Wilson, Bonnie and Carol all gave us.

Happy anniversary Dan and Teresa, and thank you for your wonderful support!

This weekend, the Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders will face each other for the second time this season. The first match saw the Timbers draw even with Seattle Sounders at CenturyLink Field, and there is no doubt that many Timbers fans will once again make the trip.

Every match between the Timbers and Sounders is important, but this time around there is even more at stake. Not only is Portland looking to potentially reach the top of the MLS table, but the Timbers could also take sole possession of first place in the Cascadia Cup table. Arguably the most hyped match of the season, an expected 66,000 fans will be at CenturyLink Field to see the Sounders host the Timbers in a game that also features the first home match for new Sounders signing and USMNT forward Clint Dempsey.

As the season wears on, the costs of traveling to away Cascadia matches can start to add up. This season, our friends at 76 would like to support the fans that support the team. All you need to do is Instagram a shot of you traveling to or from this weekend's match with the hashtag #76roadtrip and you'll be eligible to win a $100 gas card and an autographed Timbers team jersey

@daarontaylor won for his post in May when he made the trip to Vancouver, B.C. to see the Timbers play the Whitecaps. Post your picture of your trip to Seattle for a chance to win! Not going to Seattle this time? Never fear, the contest will also be happening for the Cascadia Cup rivalry match October 6th at Vancouver.

Onward, Rose City!

21 August 10:34 am

As part of our inaugural group of ticket holders, Cathy and Mark won the chance to have a VIP experience for the Portland Timbers vs. FC Dallas match on August 17th, including KeyBank Club seats, and a chance to visit with Timber Joey on the field!

We asked Cathy a few questions after the match:

When was your first match supporting the Timbers?

We started attending Timbers games regularly in 2009 with limited attendance prior to that.  One of our first memories was the raising of the banner honoring Clive Charles—we’re UP grads and long-time UP supporters and it was very special to be there that night.

What was your favorite moment of this match?

Our favorite moment tonight was Nagbe’s goal—a run of play goal with an excellent assist by Valeri.

Who would you nominate as Player of the Match?

Diego Valeri—he’s the lynch pin in the middle and playmaker—two assists tonight.

What is your prediction for the next match – Timbers versus Real Salt Lake?

Timber win 2-1—very similar game to Dallas—hard fought, possession oriented, many fouls

What else should we know about your Timbers fandom?

We enjoyed our Axe experience but are looking forward to being back with our SD2 friends—can’t beat the first row off the field for being in the action!

A big thanks to Cathy and Mark for being our guests and for their fantastic support!
