Sony Gamer's Day: Sharing Games on Multiple PS3s

Buy a downloadable game, take it with you.

UPDATED 8:30 PST

One big piece of news that came out of today's PS3 press conference was that games or other content purchased from the online PlayStation Store could be downloaded on up to five other PS3s. Downloads are tied to a user account, so by logging in on another machine, all content that you have purchased is available for download at any time (similar to what Microsoft allows you to do with Xbox Live downloads). So if you've purchased, say, a PS1 game on your PS3 and want to show it to a friend, you merely have to log in to your account on your friends machine and download it from your purchased items folder.

This will surely also help alleviate fears for those early adopters concerned that their downloads would get lost if their PS3 console breaks down. With this system in place, purchased content isn't tied to any particular piece of hardware. Whew.

That makes perfect sense. So I would see this as a way to show off more of how the online service works good then. So this is good news.

If someone on your friends list has a downloaded game. They can invite you to a gamesharing session where you temporarily download the game. So you don't have to be in the same room/area like for the PSP.

That is not what they said. What they said is what Gamespot correctly paraphrased: "2:59 p.m.: He confirms the purchase, and Harrison interrupts to emphasize that this is a live demo that will work exactly like this at our own homes. If you buy it on one PS3, you can go download it on up to five more PS3s. " On Xbox360, you can do the exact same thing. Go to a friends house, log into your profile and download your games again. Except you aren't restricted by the 5 machine limit. I have no idea how you got "free multiplayer" for your friends out of that.

  • I wonder if this means there is two HDMI ports.

I could see that being a way to allow game sharing. So I wonder if that is it or not.

this is actually a really cool idea. I've received a few invites to join games that I didn't care to purchase.

They wont use it at all... Thats what i love about Sony.. Promises that never get delivered.. Hopefully with the PS3 they have learned some lessons about promise/delivery percentages...
