Want to download the latest music for free ? Look to these blogs

Posted: 2007-08-20 04:38:20.31
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
In the last couple of months, I've come across many blogs that offer downloads & previews of the latest music from new artists and current chart biggies like Fergie, Maroon 5 & the like. I was amazed at how these guys managed to get hold of hi-quality versions of the songs way ahead of their release. Were they industry insiders ? Marketing firms who were "leaking" songs to gauge listener feedback ? Some blog owners admitted to be reviewers who get early copies of albums/singles so that seems valid enough.

Thing is, blogs like this are mushrooming. Sometimes you do get the links/files taken down by the IFPI & RIAA but of course, it doesn't take too long for someone else to offer an alternative. The blogs are helped greatly by the many file hosting sites out there like RapidShare, Megaupload, Sendspace,Zshare etc. so they don't have to worry about bandwidth costs or hosting issues.

Here are some of my favourite "mp3 blogs" that I frequent:

http://kevipodmusic.blogspot.com

http://musicalgroove.blogspot.com

http://whatz-new.blogspot.com

http://razgriz-aces.blogspot.com

http://blacksoundhistory.blogspot.com

You can find links to more sites like this on kevipodmusic's blog, some even dedicated to specific artists. Even if they do end up getting taken down, it won't take long for new ones to come up given how easy it easy to set up such a website nowadays. Thank you Web 2.0 ! :-)

My E3 predictions

Posted: 2007-07-10 04:17:23.74
I posted this a while back on the 1UP boards because I thought some of them were pretty good guesses so I'd thought "set-it-in-stone" here:

Sony
Needless to say, Killzone 2 is what everyone wants to see. If it delivers on the trailer, then this game alone is enough to spike sales of the PS3 starting this month ! What if it doesn't ? Then continue to read futher.

[EDIT: I wrote the following paragraph before the rumours & then-later confirmation began] Sony will announce an 80GB SKU which would replace the 60GB. Why ? 'cos in my opinion there's no logic in providing just 20gb more to Korea alone. It's not a whole lot more that they are getting. There are costs associated with mutiple SKUs so Sony might just as well stick to one SKU worldwide since it's a known fact on the web (look up Digg) that the HDD in the PS3 is a standard 5400rpm Seagate laptop drive that can be swapped easily. There is no need for Sony to provide one out of the box. They just need to educate the user *or* let stores like Circuit City & Best Buy rip gamers off by letting them do it for the PS3 owner at a price. The new SKU will also come with rumble & will be made available at a lower price of $499. Also, the price drop will be soon & not fall 2007.
[EDIT: I still think, there is a possibility that the 80GB version will become the default SKU once rumble (TouchSense is what Sony is calling it) is implemented]

The re-designed PSP will be showcased as well. It will be sub-$200 & will come out during the holiday season to capitalize on the impressive line up of PSP games coming out this fall. The new PSP will also be the reason that the PS3 price drop won't happen in Fall.

In-game footage of games like Getaway 3, Eight Days & Gran Turismo 5 will be shown to prove to the audience that the PS3 is capable of impressive visuals. I'm sure, Sony have learnt by now not to repeat the mistakes of E3 2005 with CG trailers.

HOME launch date & more first party titles. More PSN titles - both classic games & new ones.

New FFXIII trailers - but won't be playable (maybe behind closed doors) or come out this year. News on that front will be announced at TGS 07.

The focus of Sony's E3 Press conference should be to get people excited about the PS3 again... like they did back in 2005. In fact, journos & hardcore gamers who haven't picked up a PS3 yet will do so just based on Sony's showing at E3 this year.

Microsoft
Ninja Gaiden 2 will be announced & I'm pretty sure it'll remain an exclusive to the 360 (or at least a timed-exclusive)

Mass Effect launch date & new gameplay footage.

As far as price cut is concerned... it'll come but only after Sony. The reason I say this because the Sony can't afford to to drop the price more than $100... 'cos that in itself is a lot (for Sony, at this stage)! So even if Sony drops the price to $499, the 360 is still cheaper. Microsoft only needs to drop the price at around X'mas time *or* they might do it just before Halo 3 is out, just so they can use the hype surounding that game to push more units with a lower price point.

Halo 3 single player will look better than the multiplayer beta & a demo will be announced for XBOX Live

New game trailers which feature in-game footage for Fable 2, PGR 4, new DoA title (spin off or sequel) etc.

MGS 4 ? Hmmm, I dunno.. it would be sad to see Sony lose the exclusivity on this but going by the fact that the re-hashed trailer that came out recently didn't have the PS3 logo at the end, I'd have to say that Peter Moore is going to be very happy to announce that it's coming - but won't say when.

No XBOX handheld. They might talk more about Live Anywhere. I say "might" because they probably still don't have concrete ideas on how they can actually bring it to devices such as mobile. Forza 2 is already out & there's *zilch* about what Bill Gates talked about last year.

More exclusives but from western developers. The Japanese developers will anounce a few but will be timed exclusives (which they won't announce at the press conference obviously). Sequels to Dead Rising & Lost Planet (spin off ?) will be announced but details will be saved for X07.

They needn't (& won't show) show anything of Gears of War 2... they're still making money off the first one ! Again, my guess - X07

New Lost Odyssey trailer & will be playable. Release date announced too (at least for Japan).

Nintendo
Trailer for Nintendogs for the Wii will be shown. It won't come out this year since the Wii has enough titles that can assure stellar sales for this financial year.

Mario Kart for the Wii will announced as well. Released next year, will look impressive - for a Wii game.

As far as the rumoured re-designed DS is concerned, it will be announced in Japan later. Not at this E3. [the rumours going about were that older people (in Japan, where senior citizens are actually buying it) find the current DS too small for their fingers & eyes]

LucasArts will announce a Wii Star Wars title.

Release dates for Mario Galaxy, SSB: Brawl & Metroid 3. All playable at E3 with new levels to show. So will FF: Crystal Chronicles for the Wii.

If they announce the Wii with DVD-functionality, it'll be out this year at the same price & will become the default SKU once it's released. The reason I say this is because at $249, Nintendo is already making a healthy profit off the Wii & it would be just greedy of them to make more money off of an added functionality (& not to mention, a dated one) like DVD play back.

Nintendo just needs to showcase titles that will assure the Wii will continue it's stellar sales - for the next two years. Yes, I'm one of those people who believe that Nintendo will announce a successor to the Wii sooner than Microsoft will announce the next XBOX. Sony will stick to their 10 year plan.

Other titbits:
- More remakes of classic games & ports especially from SqaureEnix and Konami
- Resident Evil 5 trailer will be shown. Won't be playable until TGS 07.
- Golden Axe trailer
- Assasin's Creed's storyline will be revealed along with new gameplay footage.
