House staff with first women doctors 1916

Archives

The hospital’s archives are public records, and available for research under the terms of the Public Records Act 1958. The department will as far as possible respond to enquiries directly, but for lengthier or more complex research enquiries a personal visit, or the employment of a research assistant, may be necessary. Our office is on the 1st floor of no. 55 Great Ormond Street (part of the terrace of 18th Century houses on the south side of the street, opposite Powis Place), and we are open BY PRIOR APPOINTMENT ONLY from 9.30-5pm, Mondays - Fridays.

A catalogue of the archives is available for consultation. There is also a photographic collection, the personal medical library of the hospital’s founder Dr. Charles West, and a collection of ‘Peter Pan’ editions in many languages resulting from Sir J. M. Barrie’s copyright gift.

An online database of the hospital’s in-patient admissions from 1852-1914 (anonymous until over 100 years old) can be accessed at www.hharp.org. This also contains brief essays on aspects of the hospital’s history, and short biographies of medical staff. Registration is necessary to access the full contents, but is free of charge.

Access to personal records of patients and staff may be restricted in accordance with the legal requirements of the Data Protection Act 1998 and Freedom of Information Act 2000, and the Trust’s Freedom of Information access policy.

Museum

The department also has a small permanent exhibit about the history of the hospital at 55-57 Great Ormond Street, with display panels and examples of historical medical and other equipment used here (Visiting arrangements as above, for visiting groups, a maximum of 12 people can be accommodated).
