New gameplay footage of Metal Gear Solid V from TGS 2013

See Hideo Kojima sneak through night and day portions of the Ground Zeros prologue

It probably hasn't escaped your attention that Metal Gear Solid V is coming to Xbox One, and while the game has certainly courted controversy for its character design and themes, many are eager to know how the game itself plays, so creator Hideo Kojima has taken to the Tokyo Game Show to show just that.

In the footage captured by YouTube user YongYea and helpfully spotted by DualShockers, Kojima was on stage demonstrating some gameplay in which Snake infiltrates a base from the Ground Zeros prologue portion of the game in a mission made especially for the show.

This demo - running on Xbox One - is played through twice by Kojima, once during the cover at night and once again during the daytime, so you can see the difference that the environment - and the timing of your sneaky activities - will play out on your missions - it certainly seems a lot harder to attempt stealth while the sun is out, as you'd expect.

I have to admit, I did chuckle slightly at Kojima skipping his own cutscenes. Are you looking forward to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain?

  1. From what we've seen of next gen games,i'd say this is arguably the most realistic looking game an i definatly want it. I just hope its not like MGS4,as those never ending cutscenes made me throw it away.

Sorry to break it to you dude but the never ending cut scenes are sort of the trademark of the series

LOL Oh god Cunning, nooooo!! It was the only one i'd played, but please don't say that the online part is a trademark too? Staring at a screen for over an hour while it did, something, just so i could see what it was like online!? I have never came across a game in my life that had such a weird set up as that,to play online. Maybe it was a Konami issue?

Cheers for the warning, bad news, anyway Cunning. I will persevere with it though as the gameplay looks too awsome to disregard.

  4. Can't comment on the online as I haven't tried it but I have played MGS 1,2 and Snake Eater and all of them had ultra long cut scenes unfolding a storyline that spans decades and loops around more than any plot I've ever seen. Not tried the more recent games but I get the impression it hasn't changed.

I'm glad you said that Cunning,as for the first time i know understand why i couldn't get into it. I love a good story in a game, but it was the only time watching one where i felt completely numb and blank at what was being said. Skipping what seemed to be a never ending cutscene in a plane that felt like it lasted forever,i started the gameplay, which started off normally enough killing soldiers but then all of a sudden these animal/machine hybrid things appeared, giant legs with sort of rotating gun heads, and to top it off they made a moo noise like a cow an i was like, wtf!?!? lol
So yeh, clearly that was my experience because i didn't know what was going on,so i had no hook to reel me in. Which was a pity really, because it certainly seemed like a unique game.

Guess i'll have to do a bit of background story research for the new one then as ever since i seen it at E3 its blown me away with how it looks. It does make me wonder how Kojima will approach the story this time then,as surely there will be at least a few people on Xbox that havn't played it before? Will he do a bit of a re-cap? Will he make this a stand alone story? Will he just continue as normal now that Xbox has at least a few of the older games? Just have to wait an see!

  6. Try this as a start point

The plot goes all the way back to the NES so little chance of suddenly doing a stand alone game.

  7. Thanks very much for that link Cunning,i'm away for a read!!

  8. WOW! What a story!! I'd always heard the different Snake names before, like Solid,Liquid, etc but i had no idea that was how it all tied together. Calling it unique seems not grand enough now.
I don't know about anybody else, but for me,i think its quite rare to come across a story in a game that in some way hasn't been told before. Or at least, coming across elements of one that you recognise from somewhere else. Up until i'd read that, for me the one story in a game that i think is special,is the Halo one. As theres such a scope of sci-fi stories its hard to come across one that isn't borrowed or elaborated on from elsewhere, but Halo's one,i find truly original. You have that feeling that anything is possible in that universe, and the scope of different stories within it feels almost unlimited, akin i guess to the Star Wars or Star Trek universe. I believe its that originality that makes the Halo community as creative as they are,it makes me feel inspired with some of the things i see there, and i find that truly magical, and as i said rare.

What i just read is on a par with how i describe Halo, but in a different universe/setting an a different way maybe. Incredibly original though. I'd never have known MGS 5 was further back in the timeline either,so thanks again Cunning,i enjoyed reading that!

  9. Glad to help. I thought it was quite a nice timeline as it gives you the full back ground and lets you catch up, but the brush strokes were broad enough not to completely spoil the games if you fancy giving them a try at some point. You can get HD releases of MGS2 and 3 for about a tenner the pair on XBLA, and well worth it.

In addition to the truly epic plot the series does have some of the most intelligent use of gaming tech out there; high lights for me over the series include a Psychic who commented on the other saved games you had, and a boss that you could beat just by waiting for him to die of old age.

And where's Bezza? It's his job to sing the praises of his favorite franchise

Yep Cunning i actually checked them out on XBLA,for the double pack its £15 an i can't mind what Peace Walker is? Am pretty sure i just missed a sale of these games too,if i'd known that story then i would have snapped them up. Just from looking at the new one i can see theres something pretty special going on,i had no idea the story was like that till you showed me though. I missed a trick ignoring them it seems,i'll get them at some point as i'm keeping my 360 even when the Ones here.
Just like everyone else in gameland though,i'm a little pre-occupied with GTA.
Oh almost forgot, that Pyschic sounds freaky lol I had heard about the old age dude before, somehow! Cheers again :)

  11. I'm here, thought I'd let them discover it all him/herself.

You only need to play MGS1, 2, 3 and 4. Maybe PW too but I can't get on with it (don't buy it, unless you're buying the physical MGSHD box). If you read the blurb of MG1 + 2 in MGS1 then play through you'll understand it all, a summary isn't enough - there's so many intricacies to the plot - it's all random as hell and then by MGS2 you will be like what the fupp, you'll be descending the colon at one point, your brain will melt and then you'll be like... ok? And then none of that gets explained until MGS4, which has the longest cutscenes by far, but it brings everything together, MGS3 seems standalone but is actually just laying groundwork for 4 and also explaining characters and even making you play as Snakes dad.

So - it's all nonsense if you don't play it in order of 1 - 4, and even then you have to pay attention, it's one of those games which demands it. But if you do; big reward.

I think its going to be a struggle to do all that as i only game on 360 now and i don't believe you get all them here. What i miss out on i'll probably just have try an fill in the gaps through Youtube videos or something. Was on there last night and fleetingly saw they exist,in the years i wasn't on 360 it's how i kept up to date with Halo stories too. I realise its not ideal so i'll just have to workaround the best i can. Trying to rediscover this set of games i'd ignored previously right when we're heading towards One Launch Day aint the best timing either lol That seems to be the way i do things alas,ah :!:
