Ver. 1.0.1 U or 1.0.2 U
Released: Launch
- This is the default system software version included with every Wii U at launch in the North American market.
- It is highly recommended that owners of Wii U consoles perform the latest system update to get the latest system software version.
Important Note!
- The Wii U does not support legacy controllers like the Nintendo GameCube controller.
- While all accessories released by Nintendo are compatible with the Wii U, it does not mean that they will work with all Wii or Wii U titles and applications. Please check the title's manual to see if a specific accessory can be used.
Answer:
- The Wii U is backward compatible with nearly all Wii accessories released by Nintendo. For accessories released by a licensee company, check with the company for information about compatibility.
- All Wii control inputs released by Nintendo will be compatible, including the Wii Remote, Nunchuk, Classic Controller and Wii Balance Board. Up to four Wii Remotes and/or Wii U Pro Controllers can work together with the Wii U, using either the sensor strip on the Wii U GamePad or the sensor bar connected to the system.
- Wii Speak is only compatible with Wii titles. It will not work with Wii U titles.
Description:
- Step by step instructions on launching Wii U software.
Important Note!
- Any Wii Remote controllers or Wii U Pro Controllers you intend to use should be paired (synchronized) with the Wii U console before launching software.
What to do:
- Insert the disc into the Wii U console. (How To)
- After a few seconds, you should see the game disc icon appear on the Wii U menu.

Answer:
- At this time, we are not aware of any viruses or exploits operating on the Wii U. We strongly encourage all users to avoid using products and services that are not licensed by Nintendo, as these may heighten the risk of your Wii U being exposed to a virus or exploit.
- In addition, please note as with all Internet based systems there is a risk that a virus could be spread to your Wii U through the Internet despite the security measures Nintendo has put in place. We encourage all users to take precautions to avoid harm to their Wii U and/or other computing devices.
Answer:
- You can give your Wii U console a Console Nickname to distinguish your system from others when you are connecting with other Wii U consoles while in Wii Mode.
Important Note!
- The Console Nickname is only used for Wii software.
Answer:
- Simple modifications are okay and do not void the warranty. These can include decals, small areas of graffiti (hopefully applied with a brush and not a spray can), or anything that involves non-invasive change that doesn't harm the system. However, making these changes can make future repairs more complex. If the system needs repair, and we cannot fix the original system, you may lose all of your modifications if we have to swap it for a different system.
- Also, if the system was damaged by the modification, the warranty will be voided. We recommend against physical changes to the system (such as removing any part of the housing or painting) or removal or modification of internal components.
Answer:
- Controllers:
- Nintendo does not recommend extending the cables for controllers, as the current length was designed for optimal performance. It's very possible that extending the controller will result in a slight delay, which might affect game play.
- Other Hookup Wires:
- While Nintendo does not modify AC adapters, AV cables, etc., a local electronics store may be able to give you some advice. Options include extending the AV cables or using an extension cord for the AC adapter.
Answer:
- The Wii U has an internal fan that circulates air through the system. If the console is exposed to excessive dust, smoke, and other contamination these can be drawn into the system, which over time can contaminate the disc drive lens. We recommend that you take the following measures to keep your Wii console free of these contaminations.
- Make sure the console is located in a well-ventilated area on a hard, smooth surface with 4 inches of space on each side.
- For example, in an entertainment center, on a TV stand, on an open bookshelf, etc. Do not keep the console on carpet, as the fibers of the carpet can trap dust that could be pulled in by the Wii console's fan.
- Check the vents on the system regularly for dust.
- If any is present, use the soft brush attachment of a vacuum cleaner to gently clean the vents.
- Avoid exposing the system to oils, air freshener, smoke, or other airborne contaminants.
- For example, you want to avoid spraying air fresheners near the console or preparing food nearby, as this may cause oils to be pulled in by the console's fan. Also avoid allowing cigarette, cigar, or other types of smoke near the console.
- Reduce the risk of disc read errors with the Wii U Lens Cleaning Kit. When used regularly, this kit can help keep your disc reader lens free of dust, dirt, or other contaminates, which can cause disc read errors.
- Click here for information on purchasing a Wii U Lens Cleaning Kit.
Information:
- Image retention is a faint image from a constant or still picture showing as a "shadow-like" image on the screen even after the game is turned off. While any type of television can experience image retention, projection TV's and Plasma TV's are more susceptible to burn-in.
- Consult your TV's manual or contact the manufacturer to see if there are specific issues with your television. If you are concerned about the break-in length of your Plasma television, you must contact the manufacturer for this information.
- Here are a few common ways to reduce the chance of image retention:
- Do not leave the television on for extended periods of time with a single, unmoving image, such as a logo, displayed.
- When not in use, always turn the TV off.
- Use Burn-In Reduction mode on the Wii U. (How To)
- Check for a burn-in reduction mode on your television.
- Check the TV's manual for more information.
Answer:
You can use Notifications to read messages sent from software titles of from Nintendo.
- Displays up to 100 of the latest messages.
- The number of notifications displayed may be fewer than 100 if the total size of attached images is large.
- Notifications can display a subject and a body, and an image or a special Mii character.
- Notifications can be configured to launch the software/application for which the notification was downloaded.
- Nintendo eShop
- Miiverse
- Internet Browser
- Individual software
- In the coming weeks, an array of favorite movies and TV shows will become available to Wii U owners on Amazon Instant Video and to Hulu Plus and Netflix subscribers. These services will also be accessible from Nintendo TVii. Wii U owners will also be able to watch YouTube videos and channels through the YouTube application, as well as sign in to their account and control the application with the GamePad. Wii U owners who have connected their systems to the Internet will receive a notification as each video application becomes active.

Answer:
- Magnets should not affect the memory on games, accessories such as a Memory Card, or systems that are turned off. However, it is never a good idea to use magnets around any electronics that are turned on.
Answer:
- This is not recommended. Nintendo AC Adapters are specially designed to work with the appropriate system. If a non-licensed AC adapter is used (even if it outputs the right current and voltage), it may work, and/or may eventually damage the Nintendo System. The system would not be covered under warranty.
- Only licensed products that are specifically designed to be used in North America are recommended.
Answer:
- It is always a good idea to use some type of surge protection device with any consumer product. While Nintendo does not recommend or license a particular surge protector, there are many types available on the market today. While many of our systems, such as the Wii and the Wii U console, feature a circuit breaker in the AC Adapter to help prevent damage should a power surge occur, true surge protectors will protect both your Nintendo system and your other appliances from the harmful effects of a power surge.
- In addition to using surge protectors, it is always a good idea to unplug your Nintendo system after a power outage to prevent possible damage from power surges when the power is restored.
Answer:
- No. Wii U games can only be played on the Wii U.

Answer:
- We cannot guarantee accessories, wires, or power cables will be compatible with systems for other regions. Using AC Adapters from another region is not recommended.
- As with all products, we recommend the consumer purchase the accessories from the same region in which their system was purchased. There are often various differences that can cause compatibility problems or confusion. While there are some situations where an accessory might work, we cannot guarantee it.
Answer:
- Yes. Just like our previous console systems, the Wii U console is manufactured with a region code that limits the system to playing only those games sold in the coded region.
