Description:
- Steps to take when trying to improve the speed of network's Internet connection.
Possible Solutions:
- Are you using a recommended Internet service?
- Ensure no other users or applications are utilizing bandwidth on your network.
- Perform an Internet speed test to measure the available bandwidth.
We recommend use of a high-speed, wired Internet connection such as a Cable, DSL, or Fiber Optics Internet connection. Use of other services, such as wireless or satellite Internet, may result in lag, latency, or slow download speeds that prevent use of some online features.
Electronics streaming content, downloading files, or performing other bandwidth intensive tasks may affect the speeds at which other devices can send and receive data over the Internet. Turn off any of devices or programs you may find running.
Using a PC, you can check your network's download speeds by visiting one of the following sites:
If you are receiving download speeds less than recommended (many services operate best with a download speed of 1.0Mbps or higher), please contact your network administrator or Internet Service Provider.
Description:
- Steps to take when trying to improve the signal strength of your wireless network.
What to do:
- Check the location and distance of your wireless router.
- Move any metal objects or electronic devices away from your system and wireless router.
- Change the wireless channel your router is broadcasting on.
The further a device is from your wireless router, the weaker its signal strength will be. If your wireless signal has to pass through any walls or floors, this will also weaken its strength. Move the router to a central location within your home and as close to your system as possible.
Metal objects and electronic devices may interfere with wireless signals. If you have any of these, such as filing cabinets, speakers, power strips, or cordless phones, next to your system or wireless router, move them away.
Wireless routers can broadcast on a variety of channels. Sometimes a specific wireless channel may experience interference from other devices and wireless routers nearby. (How To)
