On Wednesday, President Vladimir Putin urged his country’s arms manufacturers to produce weapons that are superior to those of possible adversaries. “Our past successes are no reason to sit back and relax,” he said during a visit to the Kalashnikov gun maker. “We must constantly strive to stay on top of current demands.” He added that many of Russia’s legendary weapons were “no longer able to make the grade.”

The K-150 Tomsk, a Project 949A Antei nuclear-powered attack submarine, caught fire on Monday as it was undergoing maintenance operations at a dock in Russia’s far eastern Primorye Territory. No one was injured in the fire, and there is no danger of a radioactive leak. The submarine was laid down in 1991 at the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk and commissioned in 1997.
The first Russian around-the-world helicopter flight was completed on September 14. It took the pilots two more days than planned to finish the trip. Although the crews expected to face technical problems, the real challenges turned out to be of a psychological nature: namely, crossing the Atlantic with no land in sight.
