'What was that noise?' Well, that was the sound of Metal Gear Solid director Hideo Kojima saying some rather unusual things about "erotic" characters. You lot had rather a lot to say about his remarks, so Johnny snuck in to investigate.
It sucks when something good adds useless fan service in it. It happens with anime way too often. It only bugs me when it's prevalent to the point where it just ruins the moment for you, when it's trying to have a serious moment as the camera is centered on the girls' tits. If you want to add in a racy scene or two that doesn't screw up the plot line, then feel free. Separation of sex and serious.
Eva was more provocative and mgs3 didn't had this kind of split opinion, i think the people just became more stupid in the recent years.
I'm honestly quite surprised this is getting so much attention. Hasn't anyone seen the new trailer for this game?Without revealing any spoilers let's just say one rather disturbing operation scene comes to mind. And some of you honestly seem to be more shocked about naked body parts and the way kojima explained his creative intentions for the 'quite' character design.
this is being drawn way out of proportion. I would advice people to walk outside there homes or even put on your favorite televsion show or network and look around. How many references towards 'sex' and erotic clothing/behaviour etc. do you find? I'm not saying it's good or bad, that's up to you to decide. But calling a game or a character like this sexist i just don't understand. There a things far more disturbing in this world, and I don't believe you'll find it in this game.
Johnny, you didn't even mentioned once why Quiet is wearing just bikini and stockings.. skin camouflage.
In other news. While I dont see the point of designing the character to be "sexy", I could accept a % of logic behind her, maybe, having just a bikini top but still having combat bottoms and gear. Aside from the fact she wouldn't be required to rush into combat at close quarters and could afford to get away with less gear; say to make herself lighter and easier to, no pun intended, fit into smaller quarters; It also makes some sense that in a hot arid environment it might be a persons choice to ware less then normal. I dont think that some possible logic being applicable makes it at all acceptable to create a design with such simplistic and narrow minded goals.
But it's a problem with habit for older vets like kojima more then intent. He's always slipped a sexualisation of his characters, for example the photo mini games unlocking during boss fights and looking at breasts as naked snake. (Although, side note, he's done that with the men too - Kaz got a photo mode too, which was just as lecherous ) I just don't think kojima and a lot of the developers his age understand the change in attitudes for the vast majority of gamers now. That doesn't make it forgivable, but maybe understandable. It'll take a new generation of devs to rise to his status to change things in a positive way.

The original statement wasn't clever on his part but all he's really doing is trying to include a sexy character to give the game an extra angle. Erotic was a bad choice of word but for fuck sake english isn't his first language anyway. I would bet anything that more people cos play as this new character than any other metal gear character.

MGS has always had alot of T & A. Look at The Boss for example, she was an old lady with the body of a Vegas stripper. And that's not even scratching the surface of the whole series.
To be honest, the character design of Quiet is pretty good, the overall look is kinda slutty, but hey, it's a videogame, a japanese videogame, at least 1 (one) woman in a japanese videogame need to look slutty,
For the game overall, her character dressing is not good according to her environment, I mean, if you want you can give her a coat and put her boobs out, EVA, sniper wolf style. in any case I'll buy this game and I'll enjoy because I'm a fan of the series regardless of how slutty the women are in the game, I buy the game for the story and the experience.

Kojima is simply implementing another means of selling their game, they've got 2 things working for them
1. Well known game franchise
2. Sex sells
The kid who writes this off as being just a video game and tells people to get over it is branded a virgin, but lo and behold when the game is finally released and everybody and their mother is playing it and grateful yet again to Kojima nobody is going to give two shits what Quiet was wearing. I didn't even remember the 'press L1' for boobs until Johnny just mentioned it. The point I'm trying to make is that because Kojima is pretty much a living legend in the industry, you guys are reading too much into this. Let me know when he starts including interactive sex scenes and starts selling MGS branded sex toys.
I laughed pretty hard at this and glad I'm not the only one. It really is a stupid character design; plain and simple.
I don't mind erotism in a game as long as its in context, for example if I go to a stripclub in GTA I expect there would be strippers. If I am playing leisure suit larry a comedy game about a loser trying to get laid I expect there to be boobies, If I am playing Mario I do not expect there to be tits and ass, if I am playing Gran Turismo I do not expect tits and ass and if I am in a warzone I do not expect tits and ass, this move by kojima to use sex to sell is just cheap and below him, sorry kojima but I am not a horny teenager that is gonna enjoy a game just because it has boobs, I think I will pass on MGS shame really cause I was looking forward to it.
By the way, at 4:03 - 4:26 is actually Johnny's real voice. The GS team was able to capture a rare sound byte while he was reading over comments, unaware that he was being recorded.

I find it odd that in 2013, the "west" still has a generalized attitude that having extreme violence in video games is still more tolerable than even the most minute bit of sexuality. It feels as though people feel they have to choose the lesser of two evils and so violence in games causes less of an uproar than this did as a result of that attitude.
I agree. Besides, MGS has always been (kind of) an "erotic" game series. There's loads of these little sexy quirks in the games. This has only gotten so much attention due to Kojima's poor choice of words. Without his uttering, the character probably wouldn't have gotten much attention.
@stan_boyd i'm sure there are plenty of other reasons to enjoy the game other than boobs. he was asked about this character in an interview and explained his design choices. he wasn't saying this is the primary reason gamers should pick this up.

I agree. I think people would be a lot less violence if our media and culture in the west did not ENCOURAGE this belief.
