Lamarckianism A theory of EVOLUTION proposed by the nineteenthcentury French biologist Henri Lamarck and suggesting that an animal's ACQUIRED CHARACTERISTICS could be genetically transmitted to its offspring. Scientists have generally preferred DARWIN'S rival theory of evolution.
