(1859-1947) French psychiatrist who first provided solid empirical evidence for the existence of unconscious (subconscious) mental processes. He advanced the concept of mental dissociation and formulated theories of hypeterical symptoms and dissociative conditions that were based on the concept of constitutional deficits in psychological energy and functioning rather than on the concept of psychological conflict, which characterized Freud's developing psychoanalytic theoretical framework.
